Why Have the 90s Come Back?

We got a "Rocco's Modern Life" movie, we're bringing "Lizzy McGuire" back, everyone now owns at least one "Friends" t-shirt, and all of it has me singing "THIS IS WHAT DREEAAAMS ARE MADE OF!!!!!!!".

Why Have the 90s Come Back?

40 years ago, people assumed we would be wearing space-y Jetson like outfits and driving flying cars. Everyone assumed we'd still be in that ever so fast-paced cycle of change where we barely glance back at the decades before us. With apps like Depop and thrifting on the rise, a new generation has begun to appreciate what those have left behind for us to cherish. From TV shows to fashion, everything from the 70s and 80s to the 90s and Y2K are coming back with a smack that'll leave your brain red. In ten years from now, we'll all be saying "Remember when we lived like we were in the 90s?". I can guarantee it - not that I'm complaining.

The biggest mystery remains: how and why have nostalgia taken over? From the latest fashion trends to kids wearing "Sublime" and "Grateful Dead", it almost feels sometimes like I went back in time to look at everyday life. Take away all smartphones and I'd really be there. My theory is that humans long for nostalgia. We crave something that we can't get back, always feeling the need to obtain the past (simply because we can't). Most stores even sell vintage-like things. Shows like "Stranger Things" give a feeling no one can understand unless you lived through it, leaving many of its younger fans hungry for more, starving for a world they missed out on. The same feeling lies within "Friends" except it feels more encapsulated in those shows than anything leaving high schoolers and college students a hint of a world they long to experience.

Personally, I have always craved the past. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a paleontologist (okay, Ross). I then wanted to study archaeology. Watching the history channel was my favorite - almost as much as playing with my mom's 1980s Barbies while watching "The Andy Griffith Show" or listening to Madonna and Paula Abdul on my MP3. Nostalgia is basically my parent and reliving the past is what I'm best at. I worry that it's become a fad, but the past will always be something I feel people gravitate towards. It gives them something to reminisce and equally wander about. It's why we love rewatching "Saved by the Bell" and "Full House" or blasting Ice Cube in our car speaker.

For now, I will just happily wait for Lizzie McGuire to return back to me with open arms on Disney's new streaming platform. I happily welcome the nostalgia - no matter what it is that brought it back.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
