Things To Do During Finals Week Besides Stress & Study

Finals week is spent studying, stressing and studying even more. If you are lucky and have a moment to take a breath and relax for a moment, here are some things to do during finals week at the University of Georgia.

Congratulations! You have made it through your first semester of classes! Now just wait a minute – don't get too excited – finals week is upon us. Maybe you only have one final, or maybe you're like me with six tests in addition to a paper – whatever boat you are in, I am here to help. When you have a break in the grind of studying, here are ways to pass time and destress for just a little bit.

1. Grab some free food.

Whether there's a reading day event for one of your student organizations or not, there are so many opportunities to get free snacks and meals throughout finals week. Most individual colleges have a finals event where free food is provided, and even if you are busy studying, you still need to eat. So make eating a priority and relaxing time by enjoying a free meal with other students who are struggling just as much as you!

2. Attend a fitness class.

Throughout finals week, Ramsey is hosting free workout classes for all fee-paying UGA students. While exercising may not be a priority during this week, it is a great way to destress while also improving your health. This is also a way to see if you want to buy a Ramsey group fitness pass for next semester without breaking the bank. If you want to attend solo or bring along a friend, these free classes are a great thing to take advantage of!

3. Try meditation and/or yoga.

Finals can be taxing on your mental health and a great way to combat this is through meditation and yoga. You can look up a 5-20 minute guided meditation on Youtube, attend a BeWellUGA pop-up event, go to a yoga class or simply do a few yoga poses in your room. Whatever you decide to do, try to carry out mindfulness and relaxation exercises throughout the week!

4. Watch a movie or show.

While it may seem counterintuitive to stop studying for an episode of The Office, it might be exactly what you need to take your mind off of your exams. While you shouldn't binge-watch Netflix by any means, a few minutes or an hour of your favorite show may do the trick. Even if you don't want to start a show or movie, take time out of your busy studying schedule to watch some football this weekend with the SEC championship on Saturday!

5. Sleep.

Yes, I know all of the sayings, but sleep isn't always for the weak. Sleep is the main thing that you need the most during finals week, yet also the one thing you lack the most. The best way to spend your time when you aren't studying for finals is in bed or at least napping in a study room. While it is destined to happen, sleep deprivation should not be a part of finals week. Make sure to get the right amount of shut-eye, and sleep your worries away!

Finals week may be stressful, tiring, horrible and all of the above. To survive, make sure to study hard, but do not forget to take a break from the stresses that come with the last few weeks before break. At the end of the day, you have made it to the end of the semester and do not have any more classes till January. In just a few days, you will forget about your economics final and continue with life. Don't stress too much throughout the next week, it may be finals week but soon enough will be over and done with.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
