10 Thoughts College Students Have During Finals Week

Finals week means the end of the term, but also the week you lose your mind.

Finals week is the week where many students start to panic because they still have not opened their textbooks and the final is within 5 days. During finals, it becomes socially acceptable to not sleep, be over-caffeinated, and look like a sloth.

For most students, finals week is the most stressful time of the year. Whether or not you have experienced finals week, here is a list of 10 thoughts college students have during finals week.

1. My life is counting on you, Redbull, don't let me down

During finals week it is common for students to overindulge on caffeinated beverages, such as Redbull or coffee. Because students are not getting much sleep, they rely on caffeine to keep them awake and full of energy.

2. If this test is multiple choice, I will for sure ace it

Many students hope that the majority of the final will be multiple choice because it does not require as much memorization as do written responses. Students tend to feel less pressure when they know a test will be multiple choice and therefore are often overconfident when it comes to multiple choice tests.

3. Why do I procrastinate?

It is also common for students to question their time management skills. If students are already behind on school work, finals week just adds an extra layer to everything they still have not done. Students will either start finishing up work that was due way back or they will decide to do it later.

4. Yep, my social life is officially over

Because finals week requires intense studying if one wants a good grade, going out with friends is probably not an option.

5. I hope the final isn't cumulative

Every class has different sets of finals, but a common final to have is a cumulative exam. Many students dread this type of exam because it requires reviewing all past units which can take a lot of time and focus.

6. Is this real, or am I just half awake?

For the students that are going to sleep really late catching up or studying, sleep is at the bottom of priorities. Some students may be out of it if they haven't slept much and might even question if what they are seeing is real.

7. Does dead week mean I die?

Dead week in this context refers to the week before finals when everyone is frantically preparing and studying for finals. Many students cannot handle so much stress and some students can literally feel dead and like they can no longer function.

8. Do I really have to review chapter one?

During finals, many students will often not want to review earlier chapters as they feel they already know that content by heart. However, a lot of the times the content students chose to not review is what ends up being in the final.

9. I hope the professor curves my grade

If a student hopes their professor will curve their grade, this student has almost entirely lost faith in studying.

10. Why did I sign up for this?

Some students will be so stressed during finals they might question why they are even in college. Finals week can be very difficult but the important part is to not lose hope and remember the reason why one is in college in the first place. This might give one the motivation to keep going.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register.
