The rich keep getting richer.
Ahh yes, as the NFL free agent market finally is open for business, one must sit and ponder about where the next big name stars will be headed after last season. Sure while some will probably stay home and take the "hometown deal", others will look to take the biggest pay raise they can find to bolstered their bank accounts, whether on a good team or a terrible one.
Some teams might not be able to go out in free agency to find multiple big names. Some teams might be able to land a huge name and then get some smaller yet productive names. Then there are some who are so rich they could revolutionize their franchise and sign several big names....remember the "Dream Team".
Still, at the end of the day, sometimes location and personnel are the two biggest concerns when looking to find a new franchise player. so, with that in mind, let's take a look at my top 10 free agents and where I predict they will land this offseason.
10. Sean Smith, Cornerback
Sean Smith is a little older of a cornerback but still has a huge upside after a great season in Kansas City. Storng in pass coverage and has the abitly to swap the ball out of top receivers hands, Smith might be 28 years old and already on his third contract, but this one should be a big one. With teams looking to throw out money at several cornerbacks, Smith should be getting offers all across the nation. However, since Hollywood couldn’t bring back Janoris Jenkins to play with Trumaine Johnson, Smith should fit in nicely with the money saved by cutting several veterans that Jenkins will probably snub.
Prediction; Smith signs with the Los Angeles Rams
9. Brock Osweiler- Quarterback
Brock Osweiler is an interesting case to say the least. A lanky, tall quarterback who took over for Peyton Manning and should have won every single game is something impressive. However, Osweiler wants to get paid like an elite quarterback after only playing seven games and we’ve seen what can happen there, (Matt Cassel to Kansas City). Still, there’s enough tape on him to prove he has lots of potential to be a solid quarterback for a proven offense. While reports say it’s down to Houston and Denver, John Elway might now a thing or two more about playing quarterback than Rick Smith.
Prediction: Osweiler re-signs with the Denver Broncos
8. Alex Mack- Center
Alex Mack had a pretty comfortable job out in Cleveland. Good job, good pay, good teammates, what’s not to like? Oh wait that’s right, Alex Mack had to be in Cleveland, the team who has only had one winning season since 1998. Mack wants to go to a contender for starters and while a bit older than several other centers on the free agent market, Mack is arguably still a top center in this leauge. Multiple teams are interested in him but the selling point isn’t about the future, it’s about the now. A team who wants to and is ready to win now may be calling him to block for their new running back that bursted onto the field last season out west.
Prediction: Mack takes a pay cut and heads to the Seattle Seahawks
7. Lamar Miller- Runningback
Lamar Miller is another running back who really stepped his price up this past season. After two mediocre seasons, the former Hurricane combined for over 1000 yards of total offense and found the endzone a career high 10 times. Miller has the combination of being both a three down back as well as back who can catch the ball and work his way up field for a first down. A team like the Patriots who love running backs like that would fit but Bill Bellicheck probably isn’t a fan of his size. While it’s not New England, a protege of Bellicheck runs a similar type of offense deep in the heart of Texas.
Prediction; Miller signs with the Houston Texans
6. Danny Travethan- Inside Linebacker
The Broncos may have won the Super Bowl but they are far away from being the same team they were this season at the moment. While probably not being able to sign Malik Jackson, the Broncos should do whatever it takes to re-sign inside linebacker Danny Travethan. Travathen was one of the top performers for the Broncos defense, leading the team with 109 tackles this season. He’s also great in coverage and could be used as a weak side linebacker in a 3-4 or a mike backer in a 4-3. However, since he’s not a fan of Wade Phillips play calling and there’s an opening at inside linebacker in “the windy city”, Travethan reuniting with the coach that drafted him makes a lot of sense.
Prediction: Travethan signs with the Chicago Bears
5. Janoris Jenkins- Cornerback
In a dream world, the Los Angeles Rams would love to have franchise tagged both Trumanie Johnson and Janoris Jenkins to be their corners for next season. Unfortunately that’s impossible and with the Rams deciding to go with Johnson, expect Jenkins to want a huge pay from the Rams to stay. Jenkins is solid in coverage with 15 pass deflections this season and is a great open field tackler. He could be an huge upgrade for a team needing to find a true number 1 cornerback. Jenkins wants to be paid like a number one corner and a team in the bay area has the money and the need of cornerback to pay him what he desires.
Prediction; Jenkins signs with the Oakland Raiders
UPDATE: Jenkins signs with the New York Giants
4. Bruce Irvin- Outside Linebacker
Bruce Irvin in 2014 was one of the top pass rushers in the NFC and most of that was thanks to former defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. After Quinn decided to leave, while his stats remained similar, Irvin’s attitude changed with Seattle and desperately seemed like he wanted out the door. Several teams have interest in the outside linebacker however for the most success, Irvin should only consider one team; his former defensive coordinator’s team.
Prediction; Irvin signs with the Atlanta Falcons
UPDATE: Irvin expected to sign with the Oakland Raiders
3. Olivier Vernon- Defensive End
Just because the Miami Dolphins put a transition tag on Olivier Vernon, that doesn’t mean that he will expect their qualifying offer to stay down in South Beach. With 7.5 sacks last season, Vernon was one of the few saving graces of the Miami front seven. A big strong side defensive end, Vernon could become a double digit sack player if put with the right defense. Several teams are in need of defensive line help and if Jacksonville signs Malik Jackson, Reggie McKenzine will have no option but to go all-in on Vernon to pair with Mario Edwards Jr. and move Khalil Mack to the outside.
Prediction; Vernon leaves Miami and signs with the Oakland Raiders
2. Doug Martin- Runningback
Doug Martin had a great rookie season when drafted out of Boise St. but his second and third year down in Tampa could be ones to forget. After coming off back to back under 500 yard seasons, Martin became one of the top racks in 2015 by rushing for over 1400 yards and collecting seven touchdowns. Not happy with the offensive line in the Bay, Martin should look to sign with a team that has a solid offensive line. There’s only one team with both the money and the line that would make the most sense for Martin to sign with.
Prediction; Martin signs with the Dallas Cowboys
1. Malik Jackson, Defensive Linemen
Malik Jackson is one of the top defensive players in the NFL on the free agent market. With the ability to play both a three and five technique, Jackson could fit in either a 3-4 or 4-3 defense depending on the scheme. Last season, Jackson was one of the great duos in Denver that led the Broncos defense to be one of the top front sevens in all of football. Waiting at least $65 million, Jackson will have to go to a team that’s in need of an upgrade on their pass rush.
Prediction; Jackson signs with the Jacksonville Jaguars
UPDATE: Jackson agrees to terns with the Jacksonville Jagaurs
