Over 5 million tourists flock to the largest country in the southern hemisphere each year. With almost 1 million visitors in Rio de Janeiro alone for the 2014 World Cup, it is no surprise why Brazil is a tourist hot spot. There are tons of reasons on why people should travel to Brazil, but there are specific reasons why everyone should travel this year. Though many are hesitant to visit due to the Zika Virus and the ongoing criminal activity, here's why everyone should go anyways:
1. Visa Waiver
From June 1-September 18 Brazilian officials are allowing passport holders from the US, Japan, Canada, and Australia to enter Brazil during that time slot without purchasing a visa. This is to entice tourists to come and view the Olympic games, however, you do not need to attend the Olympics to get the visa waiver. The waiver allows you to save time and money by not requiring you to travel to the brazilian consulate or pay the visa fee.
2. Money
Currently, the US dollar is strong in Brazil. Presently it is $1USD for 3.59 Brazilian Reals. This works in favor for Americans by allowing Americans to appear to spend less on everything in Brazil. The dollar is able to go a long way and it is predicted to continue to be strong during this summer. The dwindling Brazilian economy has caused millions of it's inhabitants to suffer, but has allowed American tourists to benefit from it. Also, with the price of oil plummeting, travel deals are lowering as well.
3. Olympics
The 17 day event held in four regions of Rio de Janeiro will give tourists the opportunity to enjoy 306 medal events. The iconic games held every four years are viewed on a global scale. Having the games in Rio gives tourists the opportunity to witness the historic event and be a part of and enjoy all the culture Rio has to offer. Even if you are not buying a ticket to view a live game, there are 100's of viewing parties and huge celebrations during the events. The cheers will be loud, the caipirinhas will be passed around, and the excitement will be booming. They're very welcoming people and if Brazil loses in any event, there's a good chance they'll start rooting with you for your favored country. Brazilians are very lively and enjoy a good celebration, so you will be able to find yourself in a colorful party during the Olympics.
4. Weather
Brazil is no stranger to soaring temperatures and tropical rainfall, but thankfully the climate becomes more temperate during Brazil's winter months of late June through September. Brazil during New Year's and Carnaval is extremely hot and very humid. However, it's winter months consists of 70 to lower 80-degree weather with less rain than the summer months. The delightfully mild climate will make you feel like you're experiencing summer without actually having to endure the blistering heat.
Be warned: Zika Virus is prevalent in Brazil and traveling to this region is not safe for women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Zika and other mosquito carried illnesses are much lower during the winter months due to the much lowered mosquito population. With a lowered populations, the winter months would be the safest months to travel. The symptoms are much less severe than it's relative dengue, but everyone should still purchase an EPA-registered insect repellant. If you are healthy and protect yourself, you will be able to ensure your full experience in Brazil.
Brazil is home to the Amazon, caipirinhas, samba, and spectacular beaches. It's amazing food, people, tourist attractions, and parties would tempt anyone to trek the long flight over there. However, tourists should be more interested in going this year if they want to pay less and enjoy the party. Enjoy what Brazil has to offer and don't forget bug spray.
