10 Ways To Be A Better Person

2017 is the start of a brand new year with 365 days of endless opportunities to better yourself as a human being. There are some people that neglect the idea of becoming a better person and then there are others that take that extra step in order to better their life in general. What some people don’t realize is that there are a variety of different things that you can do daily that can possibly turn your life around for yourself, as well as for the people you surround yourself with. These 10 ways to become a better person are simple and very rewarding. Instead of striving to be an overall better person which is very vague, make being a better person an everyday goal.

I think that you should do something once a day that makes your day a little brighter. Once you start making these simple actions an everyday ideal, it will become habit - year round.

1. Listen to understand, not just to listen

Most people nowadays listen in order to respond to a conversation, but they don’t necessarily listen to understand what the other person is saying. I do agree that it is easy to get distracted by technology and life itself, but making sure that you understand your counterpart is extremely important.

2. Smile more and worry less

In today’s day and age, many people focus solely on the bad and fail to see the good in everything. Knowing this, smile. You will be surprised at how much it changes your mood. Smile at people, smile at yourself in the mirror. Do things that generally make you smile.

3. Take accountability for your actions

I do it, you do it, we all do it. We all make excuses for everything on a bi-weekly basis. With this in mind, step up to the plate and take full responsibility for your actions.

4. Be more accepting of those around you

People are always so quick to judge everyone and everything around them. In 2017, try to pick a day to be more openly accepting of other people and things around you.

5. Give love to receive love

There’s no better feeling in life than being loved by someone. Sending love to the entire world will grant everyone with optimism and positivity.

6. Be confident and love yourself

Confidence is sometimes internalized, but not necessarily radiated. With this in mind, one should emphasize self love and understanding. Love your flaws and love your best features. Be confident in your skin!

7. Forgive and forget

There are many people that unintentionally carry grudges with them. In 2017, be more aware of these tendencies and try to avoid them. Openly forgive your counterpart, friend, relative, etc and try to forget the situation entirely (this will reduce personal and emotional stress).

8. Pay it forward

Do something once a day that makes someone else’s day a little bit brighter. It’s the little things in life that go a long way. If you believe in karma, this will grant you with good karma. Example: Pay for the person’s coffee behind you in line at Dunkin' Donuts.

9. Be completely honest

Giving direct feedback can go a long way. Make sure to be open and honest when asked for your opinion. If someone actually wants your opinion, they will respect your opinion.

10. Live life intentionally

Be present in everything that you do. Be aware of where you are and who you are with. Be grateful and reflective.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
