Moving away from my hometown was one of the hardest things I've ever done, and I started to think about how I might not ever live with my family again. I might not ever see some of my best friends that I spent countless hours with in high school. Change is inevitable, and I don't think I'd be so okay with these changes without the new friendships I've built during my time here at FSU.
The hardest part of coming to a new city, hours from my hometown, was being alone for long periods of time. I wasn't used to sitting in my bedroom without a single soul in the house to communicate with. There was always someone to talk to right downstairs if I was feeling lonely.
After being here for two years, I've gotten used to accepting my alone time and enjoying it while I can. However, when I do feel upset or sad, I have friends here that are just a call away. We're all in this boat together, so it seems as though they've become my new family.
When the house feels empty and lonesome, I invite everyone for a gettogether. I won't even remember feeling alone when I have people around me, and this is what makes or breaks your college experience. I can't stress enough the importance of finding new people in a new place to make your transition easier. If I hadn't met new people, I don't think I'd be enjoying college as much as I do right now.
There are hundreds of clubs to join on college campuses and even more ways to meet people. I may have cheated a little bit by befriending my co-workers, but I love them and treat them as a family, just the same. Getting a job is also a good way to meet people and get to know them fast. You're constantly together, so there's no way you won't end up making any friends in the workplace. Another easy way to make friends is in class. Every time I don't understand the homework, I ask a classmate and we end up texting about the class all semester.
Coming from an introverted person, I know it can be hard to meet people. But, it isn't impossible. I truly believe without the friends I have made here, I wouldn't still be enjoying this college lifestyle as much as I do.
