We didn’t think it would get this far. He called Mexicans drug dealers and rapists, he threatened to deport all Muslims (even if they were born in the U.S.), which is unconstitutional, he mocked people with disabilities, he has been accused of rape; yes, I’m talking about Donald Trump. If you’re like me, you’ve heard enough about this man to last a lifetime. Honestly, I never thought he would get this far in the race. I assumed he’d be disqualified for any of the reasons I stated above, and I never thought he’d actually officially be nominated as the Republican candidate. My joking talk about moving to Canada if he becomes president has come to a skidding halt, because before, I was making these jokes offhandedly, so many people assuring me (and with me believing too) that my fear of him becoming president was just crazy. “He’ll never actually run for president,” people said, and then when he did, they said, “He’ll never actually be nominated as the Republican candidate.” Now, people just don’t know what to say.
The possibility of him becoming president has become very scary and very real. If people didn’t have anything to fear before, they definitely have something to fear now. Because if you think Trump becoming president is impossible, then you are fooling yourself. It is not impossible anymore. The presidential election is four months away, and the amount of support that Trump has received is alarming. It’s huge. Thousands of people who want their racist, sexist voices to be heard now have a candidate who will fight for their right to shoot unarmed black people and deny abortions and birth control to women. The Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton, is our only other option. A lot of people were upset when Bernie Sanders lost the nomination, and many have grown disillusioned with Clinton. Some people are wary because of Benghazi scandal, some people don’t trust her husband and his sway with her, and some people just don’t agree with her opinions and policies. Either way, when Sanders endorsed her, there was an outcry from his supports that felt that he’d betrayed them by endorsing someone they don’t support.
But what else was Sanders supposed to do? He couldn’t endorse Trump, and honestly, you’re kidding yourself if you think a Libertarian or Tea Party candidate has any chance at winning this election. We’re becoming a more progressive country, but we’re not quite that progressive yet. Sanders knew this, and had to endorse Clinton because he knew that any person who abstains from voting is basically paving the way for Trump to win the presidency. Clinton may not be your number one choice, and you may not agree with her on everything, but if you are a Democrat (or even a liberal Republican) and you don’t want Trump to win, you need to vote for Clinton. You don’t have to like her, you just have to vote for her. No vote is a vote for Donald Trump. That’s what it has come down to. Trump is already in heavy favor with the delegates and if you don’t vote for Clinton in November, then Trump will win the presidency.
America will never be the same again if Trump becomes president. His policies would cause great strain between our country and others, possibly pushing us into a third World War. Some non-white people would be deported, while others would be mistreated and threatened, maybe even killed, because of the color of their skin. This is my plea to you, reader, and to all Americans: suck it up, swallow down your dislike for (or distrust of) Clinton, and just vote for her anyway. Because of what’s happened to Bernie Sanders and other possible candidates, it’s too late to vote for anyone else. It’s up to us now to keep Trump out of the White House. Please join me in November and vote for Hillary Clinton because you don’t have to like her, you just have to vote for her.
