A letter for New Year's Eve in 2020

It's New Years Eve in 2019, and well, the year was something else. It had a very strong start and my hopes sharply declined by the time September had ended. October was arguably the worst month of my life I've ever experienced. I'm writing today for a time capsule to look back on in a year.

My goals for this year are very clear and I'd prefer to not be in the same position in a year from now that I am in now. As the new decade is looming, I realize that this one could easily be the most influential one of my life yet. By the time the decade ends, I'll be 30. You experience so much in those years.

They say the ones that plan out their lives are the ones most commonly significantly off with their expectations. For that, I will not attempt to predict where I see myself or where I'd like to be. 2019 didn't stack up to those expectations and I learned to adjust for 2020 accordingly. All I can hope for is the best for my own health and aspirations. I hope I can say I have furthered my self-growth above everything else.

Right now, as I'm writing this, I know that the year is going to be particularly significant. Like many, I hope it's a great year. But I do realize that things happen and the pendulum is constantly swinging. 2020 is the last year before I plan to graduate college in 2021. I will turn 21. I have a niece who is entering the world in the early part of the year. I'm also going to be in a position where a job hunt may begin for my true career.

I have so many burning questions for you that I hope you can answer when you read this on December 31 next year. How is the world looking? Do I still have the same job? How is my family? Have I found love? Has Trump won re-election? I guess I already know the questions I'd ask. I bet you can answer them in a year.

I hope I can write this to myself next year and be able to set even bigger goals in 2021. Here's to this time capsule for a year from now where I can evaluate where I was last year and now in 2020. Let's see how it goes.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
