When I was growing up, I wanted to make a difference. In high school, I was apart of several advocacy clubs. I had an endless drive to do something about the world we were living in, the country I was born and raised in. I wanted to help and I wanted to make our country better. I then did some more research and learned about the history of politics and so on. I realized the likelihood of me even making a difference by diving into politics was slim to none.
There is a lot that happens when the cameras are off in regards to the government. While I believe there is good, there is also chaos, secrecy, and deception. Campaigns for any political position are exaggerations of what the candidate thinks they can do. Most of the promises they make ultimately end up getting broken, but we are too busy to notice or too powerless to do anything about it. In order to get anything done, you need a lot of money and a lot of connections. You need to be a face people believe in, but that doesn't mean you're the person people need. It almost feels like an optical illusion, an elaborate hoax.
Anyone can get involved with politics, but you also have to be a brilliant manipulator. It is hard to find someone genuinely good in politics. Human beings have a power complex. Power is something we are drawn to as a species, with the developed minds we have. Politics allows this power to be given to people who are supposed to help, but in reality, can be in it for themselves. There are even those who have gone into the industry for good, I am sure, just to come out mangled and beat up from the work they have put in.
We are so used to the scandals that we have heard about people who have taken the change of entering the game of politics that it no longer phases us when the mayor of Port Richey shoots at a SWAT team or when rumors of our own President hiring a prostitute float around. Martha Hall Findley, a former liberal party member of Parliament, admits that while she did not lie, she felt the pressure to. According to an article from Vice, most former politicians state that lying will not make you successful, but then I pose the question: why does society feel lied to by politicians? Why are big promises not delivered?
If there is a way to get more good into politics, I am all for it. I am not just talking about America, but globally. If we can get good, strong people who can begin their journey and not let the corruption infiltrate them, we can make the world a better place. We need love, not lies. We need compromise and willingness to work for the good. We need more politicians who are in it for their fellow humans, not for money or power. Until politics falls back into its roots, the White House will continue to be just a building, shrouded in a cloud and bubble away from what we really need as a society.
