This past weekend's series of tragic events, including the worst mass shooting to ever take place in the United States and the murder of singer Christina Grimme, have everyone talking about gun control regulations.
According to Fox News, a man named Omar Mateen has been identified as the gunman in the Orlando nightclub shooting and ISIS claimed responsibility for it on Sunday afternoon (June 12). The nightclub Pulse is known as one of the most popular gay bars in the city and had about 300 people in it the night of the shooting, leaving 50 dead and 53 injured. These statistics make this the worst mass shooting to ever take place in the United States. Fox news reports that the gunman was heard shouting "Allah Akbar" as officers arrived at the scene and even called 911 during the shooting to pledge allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
According to NBC News, former contestant on 'The Voice,' 22 year-old Christina Grime, was shot and killed after her concert last night (June 11) at 10:30 p.m. ET at The Plaza Live in Orlando, Florida. This seemingly random act of violence was carried out by a 27-year-old man with two hand guns, two loaded magazines and a large hunting knife, who, shortly after the shooting, ended his own life.
Tragedy has struck in so many places in such a short period of time due to gun violence, such as in Newtown and Boston, and now Orlando, it is hard to believe that we have yet to come up with a solution. According to CBS News, "Democratic Senator Robert Casey of Pennsylvania announced that he would put forth a bill this week that would ban anyone from owning a gun who had previously been convicted of a misdemeanor hate crime. Casey's bill, the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, would modify current federal law, which already prohibits people with felony convictions from buying or owning a gun." It is encouraging that the predicament is always being looked into, but sadly it is much easier said than done.
For one, background checks certainly aren't fool proof, several mass killers have purchased their firearms legally after passing background checks. Even making guns more difficult to obtain or making them illegal will not stop anyone from getting their hands on one if they are set on having one. The people that plan on abiding by the law will refrain from owning a gun, but will that leave us with? The people with malicious intentions owning guns.
This is a harsh reality to come to terms with, but as tragedy continues to strike it is important to take action by spreading awareness, support campaigns to prevent gun violence and educate yourself and others on gun safety.
