We’re always talking about women’s hair - the merits of short vs.
long hair, layers or straight cuts, or highlights or lowlights. We know virtually everything about what’s
going on with girl hair. But recently,
men’s hairstyles are becoming a subject more and more people are talking about
(read: man bun). Let’s explore this
hairstyle revolution, starting at the 90s, of course.
1990’s
We all know our beloved N'SYNC star, Justin Timberlake.
This “I Drive Myself Crazy” music video, which was released in 1997, has some glorious examples of true 90s' hair. JT was rockin’ the super frosted tips, striking envy into every teenage boy’s heart.
Early 2000’s
The 2000s ushered in a wave of hairstyle exploration. In its early years, I saw a lot of the faux hawk.
In 2002, David Beckham frequently sported his fashionable faux
hawk while playing soccer, eating dinner, or signing autographs.
Later 2000s
As the 2000s went on, another hairstyle became a front-runner.
In 2007, High School Musical star Zac Efron was possibly the best celebrity to pull off "the Shag." In his rapidly rising fame, he proved that the swoopy-er and shaggy-er your hair is, the better.
2010
As the new decade begun, the Shag got shorter and morphed into the Messy-On-Purpose.
Here, Taylor Lautner shows us that rolling out of bed is all you really need for a top-quality hairstyle. This trend still exists today, and I don’t think that’s a bad thing at all.
2012
The 2010s grew diverse very quickly, and soon after the Messy-On-Purpose came the neat Crop.
In a February press conference, Jake Gyllenhaal graced us with the Crop, looking clean and respectable as ever.
2013
Another style introduced in the early 2010’s was a personal favorite of mine, the Fade.
Long and coiffed at the top, fading to nearly buzzed at the sides. (Former) One Direction star Zayn Malik looks gentlemanly but cool as he signs autographs in 2013.
That very same year, the Flow became a popular style, especially among athletes. Here, we see Bradley Cooper, Brad Pitt, and (taking the cake) Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews.
2014
Last year is when people really started talking about men’s hair because of the new sensation: the man bun.
There are mixed feelings about the man bun, from what I’ve heard, but you have to admit- Chris Hemsworth can pull it off. Lord, have mercy.
2015
The last year is hard to define when it comes to men’s hairstyles. We’ve seen everything, from cue-bald to long and slicked back. It seems like men have decided to take their hairstyles into their own hands.
I’m excited to see what the future holds, so long as we don’t circle back to parts of the 1980s.
