On October 1, the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority at Arizona State University attended the Arizona Diamondbacks, and started making headlines the following day. Selfies. A plethora of selfies being taken by the girls, sparked numerous rants on various platforms across the internet about their behavior at the baseball game. The sorority girls spent several minutes taking selfies and showing off their tasty treats to the camera lens, but it only took seconds for people to voice their opinions on the matter and begin to tear these young ladies down. There were countless hateful comments said on social media in reaction to the girls, “I hate my ******* generation." In addition, the Fox Sports announcers decided to chime in during the game, saying things like, “Help us, please, somebody help us. Can we do an intervention?” The following day, headlines across the internet were all titled similarly to this ABC 7 News article, Baseball Announcers Poke Fun at Group of Sorority Girls Taking Selfies.
It’s to my knowledge that the girls had every right to take as many pictures as any other fan at the game. They had the luxury of being carefree if they desired. On the other the hand, Fox Sports announcers get paid to do their job. But that job is to announce the baseball game, not make snide announcements about fans at the game. The announcer’s attitudes were quite demeaning and came off much more offensive to me than the girls taking the selfies did. The fact that headlines emphasized the sorority status of these girls, shows the stories aren’t meant to show this generation being out of touch with living in the moment, but they are opportunities to bash these women by making them seem foolish and incompetent. People are always so quick to judge sororities and claim that they’re nothing more than looks, but that’s a very naive judgement. Of course their typical features is attractiveness, but they're also smart and ambitious. Now is not the time to put these young ladies down, but rather empower these aspiring women.
After watching the video I wasn’t filled with disgust or shame for my generation, because I don’t believe that anyone taking several selfies at a baseball game constitutes ignorance. Yes, there was a baseball game happening in front of them, but sometimes capturing the moment can be a nice thing to look back and reflect on. There might be an underlying reason why these ladies wanted to capture the occasion. The girls seemed to be having fun and enjoying themselves, therefore it doesn’t matter if people don’t care for the many selfies they took. To be honest, it’s no one’s business and it shouldn’t be their concern. No other fans were at any risk of harm because of the selfies, so it shouldn’t be a news piece splashed across the internet the next day. If situations such as these, are what we’re calling news nowadays, then we have much bigger problems than girls taking selfies.
