Whether you're in high school or in college, finals are coming. That means a gallon of coffee a day, 30 minutes of sleep a night, and stress 'round the clock. During this tumultuous season as the semester nears its end and summer is just around the corner, it can be very difficult to slow down and take time to read your Bible or to pray. Lucky for us, God knew that in life we would face stress we can't handle on our own. So, whether you're getting ready for finals, still looking to find that summer internship, or simply having trouble dealing with the troubles life has blown your way, here is some encouragement for you with seven verses we should remember when life becomes too much.
1. "Wait on the Lord; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!" (Psalm 27:14)
In a time of hustle and bustle, of deadlines, tests, and research papers, telling someone they should wait seems counterintuitive. "Wait, when you are spending every second of the day working?" Seems crazy, but that is exactly what King David wrote while he was in an incredibly precarious situation as well. David, the boy who defeated the giant, found himself running for his life, betrayed by a former friend who now wanted him dead, yet even then he saw the value in waiting on the Lord.
2. "Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap, which have neither storehouse nor barn, yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than birds! And which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? If you then are not able to do the least, why are you anxious for the rest?" (Luke 12:24-26)
In these last few weeks, final grades for the semester will be determined, housing decisions will be made, and for many seniors careers will begin. It can be a very stressful time, so it is good to hear Christ tell the multitude, the thousands present to hear him speak, not to be trifled. Nothing can be accomplished from worrying about the future. So work hard, do your best, and at the end of the day be satisfied.
3. "Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart. All you who hope in the Lord."(Proverbs 31:24)
If you are just feeling beat up as you are going through life, God offers you strength. He wants to be what carries you through the times when you cannot carry yourself. In a chapter that is known for the description of the perfect biblical woman we can still find encouragement that, if we hope in the Lord, we have confidence that our Lord will help us in our moments of dire need.
4. "Don't be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand." (Isaiah 41:10)
In a season where peace seems so fleeting, find it. In a place that seems so devoid of certainty, seek assurance in the presence of the Lord. And, don't be discouraged by the overwhelmingness of life, but be encouraged by the victory we stand from in Jesus Christ. If our eternal victory is certain, why stress about the daily battles that you have no control over?
5. "Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you."(Luke 10:19)
In time of immense pressure, there should be fear. In a time where you're surrounded on all sides and you are facing total defeat, you should be broken. You should be trembling, quaking in fear. Good thing that's not us. As KB says in the song "I Believe", "We don't fight for the W, we fight from the W." We don't have to worry, if we are in Christ than we already won. Satan is the one surrounded. He in the one being cornered. He is the one taking defeats at every turn. Take heart, the battle is already won. We stand under the wings of Christ who defeated death. What else do you need?
6. "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let you requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard you hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."(Phillippians 4:6-7)
Nothing. Nothing is the most powerful word in that verse. Be anxious for absolutely nothing. Not finals, not your next job, not looking for your spouse, not your health, not even who will win the NBA playoffs (just kidding). But seriously, nothing! How comforting is that to know that Jesus Christ has us covered, through everything. He speaks up on our behalf. He says come to Him with your troubles, and He will be there with you through it all.
7. "For I know that my Redeemer lives, And He shall stand at last on earth..."(Job 19:25)
There is no phrase from which more confidence can be gained. We are assured Christ is coming back, and after the trials and failures we face, after the loss and disappointment, and after the long, long journey, we are guaranteed to see His face. We will one day meet the Savior of the world, who gave His life for us unconditionally. Knowing that day is coming makes the trials of today seem a whole lot less important if you ask me.
There are hundreds of verses that could have been used here, just open a Bible and read a few pages and you're sure to find one. There are 365 'don't be afraids' in the Bible, so find your one for today and take heart. Through all the trials, tests, and temptations you will face in the coming weeks, just know. God's got you.
