We can all agree that stress not only comes quickly but heavily. It is usually the result of one realizing the extent of things they need to do or how many responsibilities they suddenly have. During this time, when stress levels tend to reach the roof nationwide for students, I urge everyone to engage in de-stressing tactics. Once you finish those finals, you want nothing more than to just relax and enjoy your time with friends and family, but with enough stress, you could end up sick, emotionally drained, and more. So, it is best to take some preventative measures as we head into these next few weeks:
1. Drink green tea.
Research studies have proven that green tea can actually improve one's psychological health and reduce stress. Green tea has also proven to have many other health benefits, including boosting one's immune system.
2. Pet some animals.
Animal experts have stated that all animals can be considered therapeutic. From birds to dogs, animals are used for therapy in hospitals, nursing homes, and as emotional support pets. Taking a break to enjoy your own pet or your friends' could help relax your anxiety and reduce your stress.
3. Hand massages.
A 2008 research study found that a quick hand massage can significantly lower one's stress levels. You may think it is silly that something like this could actually affect your mood but according to Rodale's Organic Life studies have shown massage therapy directly affects the body's biochemistry, relieving depression and anxiety.
4. Stay full my friends.
We all have been in that position where you are in class or at work and you simply can't focus because of how hungry you are. While studying always make sure to keep yourself hydrated and full so that your body will have no distractions. There have also been studies that show eating certain foods can boost your mood.
5. Music is always the answer.
Most of us have probably experienced the power of music first hand. We all know it can evoke emotion as well as affect our mood. Always pack a pair of headphones if you're heading to the library to study in case you start to feel overwhelmed.
6. Turn off your phone.
Smartphones have been linked to increased stress due to the pressure we feel to check messages and notifications. By turning off your phone you are also eliminating one definite distraction that could cloud your focus.
7. Go for a walk.
Taking a quick walk around your neighborhood or campus can help clear your mind and be a fantastic break from studying.
8. Take a shower.
After studying for hours and hours either at home, with friends, or at the library, taking a quick break to shower and change can help you feel refreshed and new.
9. Take a nap.
Sometimes no amount of coffee, energy drinks, or arm pinches are enough to keep you awake and all you can do is give your body a rest. I understand we all lose some sleep during finals but don't push yourself too hard or you won't even retain what you cram.
10. Don't procrastinate (too much).
We all procrastinate and we all have cram sessions but letting all your classes pile up will ultimately cause your so much stress. Take the time to write out a list of everything you need to do ahead of time and knock them out in order of priority.
