Dear Mr. Trump

An open letter to the President of the United States

Dear Mr. Trump
The Sentinel

To the President of the United States, Mr. Donald J. Trump:

I haven't written a letter to the White House in a very long time. I remember back in elementary school, my mom told me that if I wrote a letter to the President, he would mail me back a picture of him and his family. I wrote a letter that very day, in the best handwriting I thought possible for a 10-year-old. Eventually, I received the long-awaited reply: a typed letter with a picture of the George W. Bush family. It made my day, and to this day I still have that picture in my box of memories.

Eleven years later, here I am again writing a letter to the President of the United States. After 8 long years of watching Obama aid in the America's self-destruction, words cannot express how grateful I am for you, Mr. Trump.

I didn't care much for politics before the 2016 election. I had never been old enough to vote for a President. My life was comfortable enough and I didn't need to be bothered by what happened in government. I half-heartedly pursued various college degrees, never completely happy with what I was choosing, constantly changing.

Then, Mr. President, your campaign begin. Your political opinions caught my eye, and I was suddenly very interested in the things you had to say. You weren't a normal politician, and your plans for America were bold and brave. I liked what I heard, and slowly but surely I became engrossed in politics. I watched every debate, screaming at the TV far too loudly whenever your opponents spoke. I checked the news every day - I know, I know, it's mostly all fake news, but I had to stay updated somehow! I began to write opinion articles that were shared with my college community. As my interest grew, so did my realization that this was something I could picture myself pursuing as a career. I met with a college adviser, researched my options, and decided to change my degree to political science.

Today, I am loving my classes. I used to despise waking up early each morning to listen to a professor who taught things that I didn't even have a passion for. Now, I sit through 3 back-to-back lectures, pencil in hand, loving every second of it. I'm soaking in every detail of politics and debating my opinions in class. I'm certainly the odd one out, but I no longer fear what others think of me. You weren't afraid of criticism, so why should I be?

I want to thank you, Mr. Trump, for being a huge reason as to why I am loving my education and reaching high for my future. I am planning on interning at the Michigan Capitol building this fall, and from there I hope to work my way up. Slow but steady wins the race, right? My dream is to visit Trump tower someday and maybe even meet you, Mr. President. It's a lofty dream, I know, but your presidency has showed me that even I can accomplish anything if I just work hard for it! I read your book "Great Again" over spring break. Wow. It's honestly one of the greatest books I've ever read; I was giddy with excitement as I read about your hopes and dreams for America. This country needs change so badly. Taxes, gun laws, terrorism, illegal immigrants, national debt...the list goes on and on. Hillary Clinton would have only made this country fall deeper into despair, but now, I have hope!

So let's build the wall. Let's make America safer. Let's stop illegal immigration. Let's halt the increase in national debt. Let's balance the budget. Let's reward those who work hard.

Most of all, let's Make America Great Again.

Sincerely,

Moriah Dufrin, a very excited and hopeful college student

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
