The Olympic Games have a power that is almost inconceivable. It brings together hundreds of top-notch athletes who have dedicated their lives to one goal: bring home a medal for their country. Whether in Rio or on a living room couch, almost everyone in the world tunes in for two weeks to watch these amazing athletic feats. As we watch these games proceed and cheer as our country continues to amaze the world, we should keep in mind the underlying messages the athletes represent.
With all of the turmoil consuming the news at a daily basis, it's been refreshing to listen to reports about athletes crying tears of joy after bringing pride to their countries. It's been refreshing to see that the world can unite and make something positive when it seems like nothing else is going right. It's been refreshing to see appreciation for cultural diversity and difference.
These athletes represent all of the amazing things humans can accomplish. That is ALL humans. It doesn't matter what color skin they have, how tall or short they are or what backgrounds they come from. They have all accomplished amazing feats that few can say they have done. Even those who don't medal should be recognized for dedicating their lives to a sport that doesn't guarantee success.
The Olympics came at a perfect time because they are a tool that can show the world the potential its inhabits hold. If these athletes can do the unimaginable, others can wow society with their talents as well. It's about time for the news to start showing less tragedy and more success.
While there still may be animosity between countries which is represented through the athletes, such as the controversy between American swimmer, Lilly King, and Russian swimmer, Yulia Efimova, it is important to look at the positives as well. Many athletes have shown support for each other, and that's what we should do for each other.
The Games are more than just a sports event. They are a method to show onlookers some of the harsh and beautiful realities of the world. Ryan Lochte's claim that he was robbed at gunpoint should open people's eyes to the fact that there are many problems that need to be solved, and soon. Even with the high security in Rio, there are still cracks in the system. And before the system is fixed, these cracks need to be identified.
Not everyone is gifted athletically, but everyone has their talents. Whether it be with language, science, psychology, writing, music or anything else, there is Olympic potential within these fields. It is time to put differences aside and see people for their potential and abilities rather than the color of their skin or religion. If people worked together as hard as some teammates do and use their potential, the world will be shocked as to what collaborating minds can come with up.
