To future student-athletes:
You are about to embark on the most amazing experience. Do not wish it away. Don’t let the time fly by and wish you had done more. This is your time to shine in more ways than one. Most of you are coming out of high school where you were a star, probably well known and most likely one of the better athletes at your school. Don’t get cocky, and don’t feel like you are entitled. In college, the best of the best join together for a common goal. Get ready for the experience of a lifetime.
1. You have an automatic family.
Your team is your family for the next four years. You will experience more together than you can even imagine at this point. Word of advice: Don’t let the competitive edge get in the way of the impact you all can have on each other’s lives. Don’t wait three years to realize that you are there to make each other the best you can be.
2. These are the best four years of your life.
No doubt, the experience of a lifetime. More than likely, you are getting “paid” to play the sport you love at the college of your choice. Don’t wish time by because, more than likely, you’ll be missing out on an amazing opportunity.
3. Work hard.
Don’t get to your senior year and realize that you never pushed your limits in the past three years. Limitations are only set by your excuses not to face your fears.
4. You will learn more than intended.
The wealth of wisdom and knowledge you will gain is more than just playing a sport. Time management, leadership skills, diversity, and constantly stepping out of your comfort zone.
5. Support other organizations.
They want fans just as much as you do. Gain respect in more ways than one. Support other groups and organizations on campus. You aren’t the only individuals on campus putting in hours of extra work.
6. Make the most of every experience.
Every day is another chance to grow and do something out of your comfort zone. Make each day better than yesterday. Enjoy every moment because it’s the little things that you remember the most.
7. Don’t look for the easy way out.
Don’t skip sets, and don’t expect teachers to understand. You still need to put in the work, and you will be pushed further than ever before. The expectations rise in all areas. The less you skip out on, the more you will succeed.
8. Take advantage of your “off” time.
Your off time is your chance to understand what it’s like to be a regular student. Take spontaneous trips and slow down. Take in everything around you; for once, you won’t be on the go.
9. Don’t forget that you are a student.
Time management. Do not forget you are a student. Attend study hall and use your resources. Don’t fall into those “dumb jock” stereotypes. You worked hard to get here, too.
10. You’re the face of your school.
What you do matters. When you get in trouble, it’s magnified and sheds a bad light on what you represent. You’re a role model for many, and the impact you have within the campus community is inexplicable. Be proud of who you represent on your jersey and fight for those who constantly fight for you.
You guys are in for the ride of your lives. I wish I'd known to make the most of every experience. I wish I'd known that the hunger and desire to make an impact should have kicked in the minute I walked onto campus. I hid my voice, my ideas, and my passions for three years instead of realizing that pushing past all perceived limitations was the way to success. Don’t forget to take naps, be healthy, and don’t let moments slip by. Your team is your forever family, and your college is your new home. Good luck!
