I hate the Oklahoma City Thunder. Don't get me wrong, I want Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook to win a championship, just not with the Thunder. Anywhere else but the Thunder. If I had to watch 10 years straight of a hated team like the Lakers win a championship so the Thunder wouldn't win one, I'd make that deal in a heartbeat.
I'm not going to be nostalgic and pretend I was a die hard Sonics fan. I was too young to really remember when they were good, and by the time I hit middle school they weren't really that good, and it was kind of boring to watch them lose year after year. There's just something that all Seattle fans can relate to, and that's mediocrity. All of our teams, for most of their existence, have all been mediocre, and when we were good our teams never lived up to expectations. So to watch a city get handed a team on a silver platter, only to be good the minute they get into Oklahoma City is infuriating.
It's such a Seattle sports team thing to happen. Of course, once they leave Seattle they'll be a title contender every year. Why would anyone think there would be a different outcome. I don't think people who don't root for Seattle sports teams understand that before Pete Carroll turned the Seahawks around, being a Seattle sports fan sucked.
If you are a Seattle sports fan though you get it. You've watched players absolutely stink on our teams only to leave to another team and be everything we wanted them to be. You witnessed Super Bowl 40 stolen from us. You've been through a 15-year playoff drought with the Mariners.
Maybe I'm just being a whiny sore loser that my team was stolen from me. Maybe, but I don't really care because Oklahoma City fans, you don't deserve this team. Why do you get to have my team play for championships for you? You weren't there for the bad times. You didn't know about Shawn Kemp and Gary "The Glove" Payton. You didn't see Ray Allen draining three's for us before he won with the Celtics. The fact that Kevin Durant was supposed to be our savior, and that we drafted Russell Westbrook then, poof, they're gone.
You probably just think we didn't fight hard enough to keep our team. The back room deals that happened, empty promises about being able to keep our Sonics and that the new ownership wanted to keep them in Seattle, they are all things you're blind to and don't understand.
So, #anybodybutthunder as far as I'm concerned. It's nothing personal Oklahoma City fans, it's just that you don't get to have the team we were supposed to have. You need to be disappointed year after year. You need to be at your highest highs then drop down to your lowest lows. A superstar needs to leave you in the dust because he's tired of Oklahoma City. In fact, you need a supposed superstar to come to Oklahoma City and then watch them flop. You need to experience what it's like to be a Seattle sports fan before you get to win with a Seattle sports team.
