Gilbert Arenas Willful Ignorance of Female Athletes

Gilbert Arenas' most recent series of Instagram posts about female athletes display a level of ignorance not matched by many.

Gilbert Arenas Willful Ignorance of Female Athletes

Many of us remember Gilbert Arenas very little now for his on-court accomplishments. Hardly any of us can actually say what his basketball career was like because we've heard more of contract issues and guns in the locker room.

Now, Arenas has shown he's one of the most willfully ignorant people on the planet.

The former NBA point guard posted on Instagram last Tuesday with regards to women's basketball. This is the caption he put with it (Warning: NSFW):

NOW this is what america was hoping for when they announced the #WNBAback in 1996... not a bunch of chicks running around looking like, cast members from#orangeisthenewblack...dont get me wrong, they have few #cutiepies but theres a whole alotta #beanpies running around hahahahahaha if#skylardiggins came out like this,I dont care if she missed every layup..imma buy season tickets and I dont even know where the fuck #tulsa is hahahaha#2016newwnbaoutfitPLS and if u think this is sexist,9 times out of 10 u the ugly one and we didnt pay to come see u play anyway #donkeykong...smdh#thiswillbeawesome #soldouteverywhere

This, obviously, is completely wrong and has no place in sports, especially coming from someone who played the game and has a voice to bring positive influence. The WNBA issued the following statement regarding the post:

His comments were widely criticized, but that didn't stop Arenas. Not only did he refuse to apologize, but he also doubled down on his comments. Here is one more post from his account (Again, NSFW):

Ppl act like I said some shit thats just down right sexist and rude.....str8 men are attracted to women RIGHT? Men are 80 percent of sportviewers RIGHT? So lets name a few women sports, that still attract the men viewers...#Tennis,omg they were short skirts like female..#trackandfield,short tights and crop tops,so we can see abs "we get ass prints and stomachs,in that sport YAY"#volleyball, short tights and booties hanging out the back off their shorts "FUCK wheres my beer"#beachvollyball, fyckn swimsuits, jumping up and down WOW..#arenafootball theres nothing attractive about a women playing#FOOTBALL until they came out with the gear (no they didnt)"girls running each other over with 90 percent of their clothes removed..whos the mastermind behind this#sexist sport he or she needs a fucking statue..#UFCthe manliest sport by far but they seem to attract men viewers by the million OMG it must be the tights and the crop tops and just maybeeeee a fighter gets hit so hard her sports bra falls off hahaha....ALL ABOVE SPORTS seems to understand the concept.....#Basketball has the lowest views by men BECUZ their mimicking MEN #Basketballchicks has some of the best bodies in women sports#Lesbians or #str8 we can give two shits about what they prefer in the bedroom becuz men prefer #assandtitties and last time I checked theres 20 total titties and 10 asses running around but for some odd reason were not getting it..what were getting is #tats #dreads #highsocks#baggyshorts#elbowpads..sounds like MEN attire to me..this sport will continue to be less viewed and under paid compared to other female sports#presidentLAURELRICHIE theres a reason 7 out of the top 10 highest paid women athletes come from tennis #Skirts and#ass.....if the #NBA got rid of the thug imagine for global viewing SHOULDNT you?? I dont care if u dont like the truth becuz MEN DON'T WANNA WATCH WOMEN ACT LIKE MEN..if they came out with an all #gay man sport..I bet they will wear less clothes then the #WNBA and thats a #FACT lol NOW GIVE US WHAT WE WANT and unveil them bodies...SEXINESS RUNS THIS WORLD...if ur selling sex,MEN are buying...ive never seen a man hooker trying to pick up women on the corner

There's more that I can show you, but at this point, I'm sure you get the gist of the kind of human being that Arenas is. It would be one thing if he put the first Instagram post out there, realized it was a dumb thing to say, and apologized and showed that he didn't mean what he said. It's quite another to post it, then double down on what you're saying and compare it to other sports.

Women get a hard time in sports. If a woman is dating a male professional athlete and he has a rough go of it for a few weeks, guess who people will blame? The woman. When Aaron Rodgers was going through his rough patch this season, there were fans legitimately saying it was his girlfriend, Olivia Munn, who was distracting him. I mean, are you kidding? He had no line help, his receivers were dropping passes left and right, and Eddie Lacy was not even close to being in-shape. No where did Olivia Munn appear to distract him. That's a completely uninformed opinion. If Carly Lloyd was awful in the 2015 World Cup, none of us would have blamed it on her fiance. We would have gone after her performance.

Now, we have to deal with this ignorance about looks.

The WNBA does have much reach in sports right now. They only broadcast a handful of games on mainstream sports channels, like ESPN, and most of those games come during the postseason. It's difficult to get to see the product all the time. However, when you do, you see some fairly good basketball being played by players like Skylar Diggins, Candace Parker, and league MVP Elena Delle Donne.

But the actual basketball is not what Arenas is referring to. He's saying that men won't watch women's sports unless those women are only being shown in a sexual light.

Here's my debunking of that argument. We just celebrated the end of Abby Wambach's famed career. We celebrated, quite possibly, the greatest player in US Soccer history, male or female. What we revered was the fact she scored more goals than anyone for the US, male or female. We did not celebrate her retirement because of her "ass and titties". When you accomplish things on the field or court, you get media attention.

Before Ronda Rousey got destroyed by Holly Holm, most American sports fans invested in watching what she did. Some may have because she was attractive, but a majority of us watched because she was a legitimate badass. The three fights Rousey was in before the Holm fight lasted a combined total of one minute and four seconds. She demolished her opponents. We loved her because of that, not because of her looks.

None of the WNBA players, nor any female athlete for that matter, made it professionally in their respective sport because of attractiveness. They are athletes who devoted so much time and hard work to their game, who happen to be attractive. Newsflash; it is more than okay to admit that someone is extremely talented in their sport and also acknowledge that they are good looking. It's also okay to just say they're talented and not have to qualify it with their looks.

Whether Arenas likes it or hates it, women should not get attention from media because of their looks. Yes, some of female athletes are attractive, and spectators have every right to point out that they think one is. However, to just ignore the years of hard work and dedication to the sport they love and say they just get recognition for their looks is disrespectful to these athletes. It's so disappointing to see the opinions of Arenas because I truly believed that we, as a society, were finally starting to show women athletes the respect they deserved.

We don't do that with any male athletes, so why do we seem to continue allow it to happen with female athletes?

Delle Donne's response to Arenas was perfect. "Women were not put on this earth just for men to look at,” she wrote. “We are people. We have a purpose. We are role models. I am an athlete first and foremost. #ByeGilbert.” She is absolutely correct. They are not models first. They are not sex symbols first.

They, like Arenas used to be, are athletes.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
