Growing up Black in America, but especially in a mostly-white town, I heard my fair share of incorrect and negative assumptions about Black people. There is so much hate for my people in this country that we call home and it is a direct result of America's racist past the many refuse to acknowledge or repair. Our contributions to history, inventions, pop culture and so much more are constantly overlooked in text books and daily conversation. We are instead often reduced to harmful and incorrect stereotypes. But then, in 2008, we were given a glimmer of hope, just as his campaign promised, when Barack Obama began his run for the presidency and won. Twice!
One black man winning the presidency most definitely did not repair all of America's racism in one fell swoop. If anything, his run and eventual two-time win prompted racists to reemerge and state their ignorance and hatred loudly. But for fellow Black Americans. seeing a Black man win the presidency and seeing his beautiful, intelligent and somehow still relatable family as the head of this country brought nothing but happiness and pride.
From President Barack Obama being one of the most popular presidents in the history of the United States to First Lady Michelle Obama being the most highly educated First Lady in all of American history, they have served this country with dignity and grace. The love between Barack and Michelle was constantly on display and made this country believe in love again. From the look in their eyes when they exchange glances to the way Michelle jokes about Barack's ears, their love felt playful ad sweet. The way they have supported and loved their children is the very definition of the family values. And to top it all off, they were making history each day in the White House as the first Black President and First Family.
They were able to change the history of this country in a way few others could. They gave hope to those who grew up during the Civil Rights movement who never thought they would see themselves represented in the most powerful position in this country. Because of President Barack Obama's time in office, there are black children across this country who believe anything is possible. To see yourself, your community, your people, represented in such a profound and powerful way has an impact I'm not sure I could ever put into words.
So, on this election day as we vote out my personal favorite First Family, I will admit that I am sad, heartbroken even. The Obamas have been hands down the most down to Earth First Family this country has ever seen while also carrying their title with grace and pride themselves. Their presence as the head of this country will be missed for years to come.
