The unfortunate truth of college is that you will not get much sleep, and you will eat more frozen meals than you ever have or will in your life. With the busy schedule including work, school, friends, organizations, internships, community service and anything else you have to do throughout the week, making healthy decisions is not really on the top of that list. So here are some things you can do to be healthier without sacrificing any of your precious time:
1. Drink water.
Drinking water can fix almost anything. Have acne? Drink water. Tired? Drink water. Want to win the 2016 election? Drink some water. I promise you, H2O can do wonders to your overall health and will give you energy without taking three shots of espresso in the morning. AND it is zero calories, does not have weird preserving chemicals, and your body is mostly made of water so replenishing that is so important.
2. Walk more, drive less.
One of the best things about college campuses is that almost everything you would ever need is in about a miles reach. So get up and walk or bike to class instead of driving. This can also save you some money instead of spending it on gas, a bus pass, or parking. Burning those extra calories and getting your 10,000 steps in for the day will help avoid the freshmen 15 and make your heart happy.
3. Multitask.
I for one have no time for an hour exercise regime everyday. So to get your workout in try walking on the treadmill (go full incline for some strengthening), on the elliptical, or stair stepper while you study. These exercises are not super tiring or require a ton of movement so you will be able to read or flip through flashcards. Another idea is to try doing crunches or planks while friends quiz you.
Pro tip: They say if you sit for eight hours (a normal job or school schedule) only an hour of exercise can fix the damage that sitting for so long does to your body for the day.
4. Have fun, get active.
Most of the time working out is not something you want to suggest when your friends are finding something to do. So coming up with ideas that make you get out and active that are fun can help you stay healthy. Trampoline parks, hikes, a bike ride, taking a dance class, or even just exploring your town are all great ideas to have fun with friends but also get a mini workout in.
5. Skip the pizza rolls.
I know going for a frozen meal that takes one minute to cook in the microwave is always tempting when you have no time to cook. But swapping those meals for fast healthy food can give you more energy and fill you up longer. Some foods that are healthy but fast could be oatmeal, microwave sweet potatoes, frozen veggies, and tuna.
6. Journal.
Health is not just about staying fit and eating healthy. It is also keeping yourself sane, even when your favorite guy (Chase) gets kicked off the Bachelorette. But there is a way to channel this frustration and negative emotion. Doing something you are passionate about to express yourself in a positive way is the best way to relieve this stress. For me it is journaling. Picking up a pen and paper and writing about how much I dislike Becky (I do not know a Becky) always makes me feel better and clears my head. Writing things out can make you see a situation clearer and help you work out the best way to handle whatever is making you restless.
College can be hard and making time for healthy habits is not always at the top of your priorities. But making time to care for yourself and your body is important and will make getting through the day easier.
