It wasn’t supposed to be this easy.
They weren’t supposed to be this good.
No one saw this coming.
That wasn't just what non-Eagles fans are thinking about this team, but almost all members of the passionate fan base are having the same thoughts.
And for once, the Eagles not matching the fans expectations has actually turned out for the best.
In the first half of the 2017 NFL, coming off of a mediocre 7-9 record in 2016, the Eagles already have more wins this year and have done it almost without ease.
In a single half of a season, the Eagles have swept their arch rivals, The Washington Redskins, after losing five straight games to them in previous seasons.
In a single half of the season, the Eagles not only have the best record in the NFC East but the best record in all of the football.
In a single half of a season, the Eagles are undefeated within their division, conference, and at home.
The NFC Offensive Player of the month and MVP candidate
This magical run the team is going through right now is unprecedented, especially considering that they are led by a second-year quarterback coming from a smaller school in North Dakota and a second-year head coach who was coaching high school not long ago.
Just about everyone from the offense to the defense to the special teams has stepped up and played to their highest potential.
Even Nelson Agholor, who was so bad last year that fans made Twitter accounts called "Is Agholor Cut Yet?", has resurrected his career as a great slot receiver for Wentz. Maybe changing his number from 17 to 13 was all he needed.
I have followed this franchise through exciting ups and despairing downs for over 13 years, and I can say that without a doubt, this is the most fun I have had watching them since their last Super Bowl appearance in 2004.
Their season kicked off with a solid and convincing win in Washington, ending a brutal five-game losing streak to the Redskins.
And then in their one loss to the Kansa City Chiefs, they still looked impressive and only a few mistakes kept them from victory
Looking back, however, the game that really elevated the season into what it is was the home opener against the Giants. While the Eagles have had a history of miracle comebacks against New York, this game was one where they were coming off a loss and had blown a big lead.
Odell Beckham Jr. finally took over the game and became, well, Odell Beckham Jr. and it looked like the NFC East favorite Giants were going to get back on track with their first win.
And then all of the sudden Jake Elliot, the backup rookie kicker who missed a 30-yard field goal in Kansa City a week before, attempted one over twice the distance.
And the kick just got over the crossbar, setting the record for the longest field goal in Eagles history. With that stunning victory over the Giants, it changed the course of both teams this year: New York fell into the bottomless pit with one of the worst records in the NFL and the Eagles have the best record in football.
The Eagles haven't looked back and have beaten each of their opponents in different styles:
Pound the ball with LeGarrette Blount against the LA Chargers.
Attacking the Cardinals through the air.
Intercepting Cam Newton thrice despite bad penalties on Thursday Night Football
Sweeping the Redskins with Randall Cunningham-esque plays from Wentz.
Bullying the 49ers with a dominant defensive front.
Dismantling the Broncos in every phase of the game.
And around the league, random things are happening which benefits the Eagles such as:
The entire NFC having no clear-cut dominant team besides Philadelphia.
Eziekel Elliot's suspension battle going long enough for him to possibly miss the Eagles game.
The unfortunate season-ending injury to the best quarterback in the NFC in Aaron Rodgers.
It is both so exhilarating and terrifying how the Eagles long Odyessy towards the You-Know-What (Can't say the two words out of fear of jinxing but it rhymes with Blooper Dole) in the Wentz/Pederson could be over as soon as their second year together!
But if somehow, someway, the planets align and this really is THE year, then let's embrace it and run with it as far as we can. After all, even impartial observers should know that no fan base wants and deserves a title more than Eagles fans. No fan base has given their team as much as Eagles fans have with little in return. So this season could turn out to be the overdue stress-free ride that the 2008 Phillies gave us.
If there is a negative to this season so far it would be the injuries to stud players like Jason Peters, Jordan Hicks, and Darren Sproles.
Yet even then, I'm not worried about their absences because this team's "Next-Man Up" Mentality has become legitimate. The likes of Vaitai, Clement, and Kendricks stepping in have proven that.
While the running game was less than ideal this season, it was still solid enough to win games. That was until Howie Roseman managed to pull off a trade that stunned Eagles fans by acquiring Dolphins Running Back Jay Ajayi and only giving up one of their two 4th Round picks for next year's draft!
That trade for a key player like Ajayi is a sign that the Eagles are having a special season this year, and they might as well push their potential as high as they can go.
As for the second half of the season, we will see where it goes. Either they can continue this run and potentially have home-field advantage in the playoffs, or go back down to earth.
For long-time Eagles fans, it can be easy to await a let down considering this team's history which reads like a long Russian novel.
After all, in 1994 (the year I was born), the Eagles went from 7-2 to 7-9 in Jeffrey Lurie's first season as the owner. But that team was coached by Rich Kotite, this team has created a kind of culture that doesn't look capable of falling into the trappings of the Eagles of old.
So as the days get colder and the true tests of football come along in November, December, and January (possibly February?)
Even if this Eagles team comes up short of winning it all like those early 2000s teams I would still consider this season a success because the expectations were low this year.
No one pictured them being this good especially after witnessing epic disasters like the 2011 Dream Team and the Failed Chip Kelly Experiment. Those memories have become distant cautionary tales.
This team isn't a dysfunctional Frankenstein monster but a well-oiled machine that has been running its engine smoothly and humbly, with the hunger to win still intact.
And for Howie Roseman, once called a "pencilneck weasel" by fans on sports talk radio, if everything falls into place, this could go down as his Mona Lisa masterpiece. A work of art we can marvel at for the rest of our lives.
