The first and most important decision of everyone's day is, "where do I get my cup of coffee?" More specifically, as college students, our question is "Starbucks or Dunkin' Donuts?" Growing up, all I knew was Dunkin's. Now, to be honest, once I was introduced to Starbucks in high school, I really did try to like Starbucks; but my inner New Englander wouldn't allow it nor my aversion to burnt coffee taste. I finally came to the conclusion that Dunks is definitely the way to go. No, I am not oblivious to the stereotype that "Dunkin' Donuts is a New England Thing" and that is why I am here to explain the many reasons New England runs on Dunkin', and not Starbucks.
1. There is one on every street
Okay, not every street. That is a bit of an exaggeration, but it is not too far off. I have picked Dunkin' Donuts locations corresponding to my numerous and different commutes. There is one spot in the direction of my drive to school, commute to work, and even the route to pick my brother up from school. Even when I am in an unfamiliar area of New England, Siri does not fail to find a Dunkins' less than 4 miles away. As for Starbucks, I am only aware of the one near my high school and the one on Brandeis's campus (which also has a DD).
2. It is as simple as small, medium, or large
There is no worse feeling than walking into Starbucks and not understanding the terms tall, grande and venti. Not only are the words uncommon in the vernacular, but they are also confusing. I have never thought that the adjective "tall" could mean small. Moreover, the medium is deceivingly called a grande — the Spanish word for big. If you can speak fluent Starbucks, add it to you resume; I'd be impressed.
3. Dunks is cheaper than Starbucks
Although it may be just a few cents, every penny counts; at least for a broke college student, it does. If I were to purchase my usual medium coffee every morning I have work, I would save $1.35 per week by going to Dunkin' rather than Starbucks.
4. Dunkin's has fresh made pastries and donuts
Dunkin' Donuts have bakers that freshly bake all the pastries in store, while Starbucks ships and microwaves their goods. Why go and pay twice as much when you can put bread in the microwave at home for the same quality. The Starbucks products are once again more expensive than the fresh Dunkin' Donuts.
5. Tom Brady runs on Dunkin'
No explanation needed. #freebrady Just living up to the stereotype!
