It takes a special significant other to be able to date someone who's active in the military. Having a boyfriend or girlfriend in the military isn't always the most relatable thing, but it is definitely something that's relevant. Being in the military is very hard for those who are in it, but it's also hard for those who have to wait for their soldier, sailor, or airman back home.
While it might be hard, there are definitely some perks to dating someone in the military. Here are 5 of the most important ones I've learned from experience:
You get your space when you need it.
Sometimes you need space from your S/O. They can get on your nerves, they distract you from things you need to be focused on, they may be out of the loop when it comes to events going on, et cetera. Whatever the case may be, sometimes you need some time to yourself.
You can focus on studying and your schoolwork.
When I need time to study and focus on schoolwork, I can very easily get time to myself and not have to worry about my boyfriend.
It makes you learn how to be emotionally independent.
Basic training is where most of this kicks in. There will be lots of events that happen that will make you want to go to your S/O for a shoulder to cry on, but there's plenty of times you can't do that.
You have to figure out a way to calm yourself down and go through your dilemmas without having to confide in that person.
It encourages you to find other outlets for yourself.
Since you have to be independent, it is also a great time for you to find an outlet for yourself if you don't have one already.
It allows you to learn more about yourself.
You not only figure out how to not rely on your S/O emotionally, but you find out more about who you are as a person.
You figure out exactly how much you love the person, how you can balance everything, how to be patient, the list goes on and on. In any relationship, both partners should be able to be themselves and go at their own pace.
Being in a military relationship allows both of those things to happen.
