6 Female Role Models Who Are Better Than Hillary Clinton
Washington Times

Following Hillary Clinton's tidal wave of support, which allowed her to clinch the Democratic nomination, women all over the United States are showing their support by using the popular hashtag #imwithher. Celebrities such as Lena Dunham, Amy Poehler, Katy Perry and Shonda Rimes have proudly stood with Clinton as she goes farther than any woman in history to break the "glass ceiling" of feminism. While I'm all behind advocating for women's rights, do these celebrities, as well as many other women in America, know just exactly who they're standing with?

I don't claim to be a political guru, so I won't attempt to list the many discrepancies found in Mrs. Clinton's political history—but, we all know that there are far better women in positions of influence and power that we could encourage girls to look to. Influential women all over the U.S. continue to mold the lives of young women, whether they are aware of it or not. Many girls look to these women for political, lifestyle, fashion, diet and beauty advice. As a young woman, I struggle to find inspiring and truthful role models in social media savvy world we live in today. I know mothers must worry about who their young daughters look up to. Here is a list of six influential women who demonstrate poise and elegance while fighting for notable causes and helping to change the world.

1. Malala Yousafzai

After surviving a near-death shooting in her home country of Pakistan, Malala uses her rise to fame as a platform to advocate for girl's education. She founded the Malala Fund, which works to secure girls' right to a minimum of 12 years of quality education, particularly in the global south. She met with many world leaders and continues to urge all political leaders to "do better" so that we can be the first to see #thelast. Malala is the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for her work to improve girls' education and support worldwide peace.

2. Emma Watson

Originally known for playing the loyal friend of Harry Potter, Emma Watson is now making a name for herself by being one of the most classy, respected young women in Hollywood. Fashion critics frequently place her on "best dressed" lists, and directors always want her to act in their films.Emma's main focus, however, is drawing attention to very worthwhile causes such as ShelterBox, which brings international relief efforts in the wake of natural disasters. She also advocates ending extreme poverty by 2030 with the nonprofit organization Millenium Promise. Perhaps her biggest humanitarian step was becoming an international ambassador for United Nations and helping launch the UN Women campaign HeforShe. Emma used her fame to advocate for a new cause by wearing a gown made from recycled material to promote her latest film. She designed and wore this dress to support the Green Carpet Challenge and encourages others to be open to the possibility of ethical fashion.

3. Kate Middleton

Kate Middleton quickly learned to embrace the media attention surrounding her when she wed Prince William of Wales. She visited many charities with her husband, and quickly found the niche in which she would focus her charity efforts. In lieu of wedding gifts, Kate and Will asked friends and family to donate to an anti-bullying campaign called BeatBullying. This organization resonated closely with Kate because she was the victim of peer bullying as a teenager.

She is also active with the Peace Players, which unites children through basketball, as well as CentrePointe, providing shelters to homeless youth. Duchess Kate's biggest cause, however, is advocating for children's mental health. She feels passionate about erasing the stigma of mental disorders and working to promote mental health to all children. She even wrote an article for the Huffington Post to discuss the importance of creating a safe environment for all children to express their emotions.

Personally, one of my favorite attributes about Princess Kate is her classy fashion sense. It is extremely difficult to find a famous role model who dresses modestly and expresses her femininity in such sophisticated manner. Much like her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, Kate has graced many magazine covers and fashion blogs for her refreshing fashion choices.

4. Laura Bush

Much like Princess Kate, former First Lady Laura Bush found a platform to raise awareness for causes that matter to her. One of those passions is fighting illiteracy all over the world. She has served as the Honorary Ambassador for the United Nations Literacy Decade, worked with the Library of Congress to create the National Book Festival in Washington, D.C. and founded The Texas Book Festival in Austin while serving as First Lady of Texas.Mrs. Bush also partnered with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to launch The Heart Truth campaign and the Red Dress project to raise awareness for women's heart disease. She also works to promote women’s health through Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon through the Bush Institute. Laura serves as the Chair for the Bush Institute’s Women’s Initiative, which trains female leaders all over the world. She is known to be one of the classiest and most sophisticated first ladies since Jackie Kennedy. Her southern charm and bright smile bring the perfect amount of grace and love to any room, while still demanding respect and recognition.

5. Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato has broken many barriers since rising to fame through Disney Channel. What many people love about her is that she owns every aspect of her life—good or bad. She has opened up about her struggle with bipolar disorder, anorexia and self-harm. She uses her past as a stepping stone to raise awareness for mental health and breaking the stigma associated with mental disorders. She even uses her tattoos to tell the world how she fought her battles and won victoriously. As a victim of bullying early in life, she works closely to "Stomp Out Bullying" and empower women to be confident in their own bodies and love themselves exactly as they are. Her followers are encouraged to post makeup-free selfies for No Makeup Monday on her social media accounts. She recently took to Twitter to support fellow artist Kesha to stand up for women. She wrote, "Women empowerment is leading other women to make actual changes in our society." You can be sure that Demi does not play the role of a helpless woman, but an empowered woman who can stand up for herself and those around her.

6. Lauren Conrad

Similar to many young women in Hollywood, Lauren Conrad rose to fame through a reality series based on her life. Many people have credited her with being one of the most normal and down-to-earth reality stars on television. When the show ended, she studied at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, and went on to become one of the most influential young women in the beauty and fashion industry. She has launched two fashion lines, LC Lauren Conrad and Paper Crowns, and both give women the opportunity to buy and wear sophisticated yet modern attire. Lauren partnered with BlueAvocado to launch XO(eco); an eco-friendly line of cosmetic and travel accessories. She also partnered with Hanna Skvarla to launch a fair trade shop, The Little Market, which supports and connects local artisans from around the world to buyers who appreciate the craftsmanship and uniqueness of each piece. Lauren also finds time to maintain a lifestyle blog that gives all kinds of advice to women including health, diet, fashion and beauty. Although she works tirelessly in all endeavors, she also advocates for charities such as Feeding America and Soles4Souls. Lauren has come to be known as the modern-day Martha Stewart, giving advice and wisdom to women in all areas of life.I think it's safe to say that there are far better role models for young girls to look up to than Hilary Clinton. These amazing women are just the first to take a step out to own their feminism in a powerful yet sophisticated way. Everyone makes mistakes, but I can almost promise that none of these women caused four American deaths on foreign soil or charmed her way out of a nationwide email scandal.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
