Almost every month of the year has its benefits. January is New Year’s Day. February is the Superbowl and Valentine’s Day. April is Easter and the true start of spring. May is when school ends and the summer begin. June is the first month of summer and away form school, so who can complain. Then there’s the fourth of July, the last month of summer with August, the excitement that comes with a new school year in September, Halloween in October, Thanksgiving in November, and the holidays in December. All of the months have redeeming qualities except one. The list below shows why March is the worst month of the year, and why I could not be more excited for April to begin.

1. Lent

For Catholics, Lent is a necessary time of year, but it is certainly a depressing time. The music is somber, masses are less enjoyable, Jesus is betrayed, and many of us have to survive the month without sweets or some other luxury that we give up for lent. For this, March gets a thumbs down.

2. The Weather

March is a total tease with the weather. One day it reaches high 60s and then the next day it’s back to freezing cold or snow. Nothing about the weather in march is pleasant.

3. St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day is a fun-ish holiday, but the holiday revolves around drinking and eating lots of Irish food. This seems like it would be a plus for the month, but I do not think that it’s a coincidence that people often stress eat or drink to forget their problems and that St. Patrick’s Day happens to fall in the worst month of the year.

4. St. Patrick’s Day Hangovers

The one day of March that’s bearable due to excessive alcohol and food consumption leads to a day that makes you pay for your good time. If you try to forget about the terrible month of March, you’ll be reminded by the headache you wake up with the next morning.

5. March Break-ups

You’re not safe in March. You’ve made it through Christmas, New Year’s, the freezing cold month of January, Valentine’s Day, and now it’s time to say goodbye. The happiness that comes with all of the holidays covers all of the issues that are unmasked in March.
