It is very important for mental and physical health to spend time outdoors. Western Pennsylvania is full of beautiful woods, spectacular rolling hills, clear streams, adorable animals, and even mountains. Why not pay a visit to these breathtaking sites? So, here are some great options of some popular state parks:
1. McConnell's Mill State Park.
Don't let the size of this state park (2,546 acres) convince you not to go. McConnell's Mill is the perfect hiking spot any time of the year (yes, it is open all year). It is most notable for its waterfalls and rocky terrain. However, you cannot swim in this water as it is very fast-moving, but you can fish and boat. And don't forget to pay a visit to the old mill, itself.
2. Moraine State Park.
Moraine State Park is 16,725 miles of rolling hills and lake water. Here, you can camp, hike, swim, picnic, windsurf, fish, and they even have a concession stand to satisfy you after a long day at the lake beach.
3. Raccoon Creek State Park.
This park is 7,572 acres and it contains a 101-acre lake where you can swim and boat. The park also offers a recreation hall for parties and gatherings with bathrooms, a kitchen, and a fireplace. Here, you can camp, hike, backpack, and even follow equestrian trails for horseback riding.
4. Ohiopyle State Park.
This park is located in Fayette County, Pa. It contains more than 14 miles of the Youghiogheny River, providing for an abundance of water activities such as whitewater rafting, swimming, and perhaps most well-known of the area, natural water sliding. In addition to water-based activites, you can camp, bike, hike, and picnic. And Fallingwater, by Frank Lloyd Wright, is nearby!
