Thinking up the best Halloween costumes can oftentimes be a great struggle. To get you started on yours, here are some ideas for costumes that are relevant to events that have happened this year.
1. Left Shark
Katy Perry's Super Bowl halftime show was one of the best in the past decade, not only because she killed it, but because we were also graced with this wonderful dancing shark. Catching the eye of the audience with his general awkwardness and sloppy dance moves, Left Shark can be a Halloween costume that throws you back to early February. There are tutorials on how to make the costume, as well as actual Left Shark costumes that you can order, if you'd rather take the easy route.
2. Justin Bieber’s Comeback
Justin Bieber has been flying low on the radar ever since people started to hate him for his I'm-better-than-you persona. However, beginning this year, he has been trying hard to regain the love of his former fans and to make a comeback into the limelight. Whether you still hate him or not, this comeback can be easily transformed into a Halloween costume if you bleach your hair blonde, carry around a microphone, and start crying because you are too emotional. Just beliebe in yourself.
3. Jon Snow’s Death
For all the "Game of Thrones" fans out there, Jon Snow's tragic death was perhaps one of the most distressing, yet memorable moments of this year. These super-fans turned Halloweeners can pay tribute to George R.R. Martin's brilliant work by dressing up as Snow being stabbed in the back by his fellow knights. Better yet, have a friend dress up as Olly to follow you around and then betray you when you least expect it. "For the Watch."
4. President Kanye West
When Kanye spoke at the MTV VMA's, no one was expecting his big presidential announcement for 2020. It's unclear how serious he is about his candidacy, but President Kanye West would be a simple and funny costume for this Halloween. Essentially, all you have to do is dress in khaki-colored clothing and talk for a long periods of time that seem like they are going to end, but don't. Bonus: Add First Lady Kim K. for a couple's costume.
5. Donald Trump
Donald Trump is another candidate that no one expected to seriously run for president, mostly because of his outrageous and semi-inappropriate behavior. Luckily for us, this makes him an easy costume to dress up as and a hilariously relevant politician to pretend to be. All you really need to do is nail the combover and walk around yelling ridiculous comments about serious political matters. There are Donald Trump masks, but if you'd like a more scandalous look, you might prefer this costume.
6. Cecil the Lion
The story of Cecil the Lion was a heartbreaking and tragic one for the U.S., as the poacher was one of our very own citizens. What better way to remember this creature in a positive light than to embody him in your Halloween costume. Simply dress up as a lion, but make sure you clearly distinguish yourself as Cecil with his legendary black mane.
7. Same-Sex Marriage
The legalization of same-sex marriage was by far one of the most satisfying and progressive moments this year. We have been celebrating this momentous event ever since the Supreme Court ruling, and you should continue celebrating it through Halloween. The costume is pretty self-explanatory, just start with either two wedding dresses or two tuxes. The rest can be uniquely made to fit your personality.
8. Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood" Video
This bad a** music video is designed to look like a movie trailer and tell the story of Swift's girl power. Throughout the song, she is seen preparing for revenge alongside her female sidekicks, who just happen to be famous celebrities ranging from Lena Dunham to Gigi Hadid. If you're looking for a girl's group costume, this would do anyone justice. To complete this look, be sure to wear a lot of black leather, high-heeled boots, and an assortment of toy weapons. 9. Amy Schumer
Amy Schumer has been in the spotlight for most of this year due to her hilarious standup comedy, as well as the release of her new movie "Trainwreck." Among other things, she has released music videos parodying the booty craze and girls who don't need makeup. These all provide loads of options for costumes, but if you'd rather be her main character from the movie, all you need for your costume is a yellow dress, a brown paper bag with a bottle in it, and messed up makeup. For some advice on how to put this costume together, here is a last minute tutorial.
10. Netflix and Chill
Raise your hand if you have been personally victimized by this phrase. Asking someone to Netflix and chill has become one of the most popular ways to hang out with someone you are interested in. Dressing up as it may take some creativity, but one idea is having one person wear a Netflix T-shirt and the other person carry around a bag of ice. If that's just too cheesy for you, you can also interpret the phrase in other ways.
