Ah, senior year of high school. You're most likely stressing over which college you want to go to, or if you even want to go. People are probably asking you what you want to be when you grow up, and just when you think you know everything, you give them a blank stare of confusion because you don't have the slightest idea. Trust me, I was once like you, too. Constant anxiety over pretending to have my life figured out and convincing myself that I was going to be a doctor got old real fast. But listen to me when I tell you that college is the time to figure yourself out, your life out. Here are 11 things that you should know about college as a high school senior...as told by The Office.
1. You don't have to have your career planned out. Chances are, you will probably change your major at least once.
2. You're probably not going to understand everything you learn in college like you did in high school.
3. You're going to meet a lot of new people, and sometimes those new people will become your best friends.
4. Speaking of best friends, don't expect all of your old ones to stick around once you leave for college.
5. You're going to make a lot of mistakes...a lot of them involving alcohol.
6. Don't worry, your friends are going to make mistakes too. Their stupidity will help you avoid some mistakes in your own life.
7. You're probably gonna feel like you've hit 17 mid-life crisis's after your first semester. This too shall pass...maybe...hopefully.
8. Don't think that waking up early for school is gone forever, you're probably going to have to take an 8 a.m. at some point.
9. Don't feel like you need to dress up for class every day. Trust me, people go to school looking like a wreck and it is totally acceptable.
10. There will be a point that you are forced to stop drinking for a weekend to work on school work...college isn't all about partying. Just remember, there's always next weekend.
11. In the end, everything is going to be alright.
Okay, on a serious note, senior year was definitely my best year in high school. I involved myself in every event possible, found my friend group, and found myself...or so I thought. I thought at the age of 18, I was going to have everything figured out. Because I was "grown up," my future plans had to be set right at that point; and once I decided on those plans, I couldn't go back. The thought of making mistakes and changing my mind in college gave me genuine anxiety. What if I don't like my program? What if I don't want to be a doctor anymore? Chances are, you're going to change your mind and you're going to make mistakes. So senior year high school students, don't fear the inevitable. You're human. It's okay if you get a C or D on your first college chemistry test. Yeah, you probably spent all night studying for it and you're pissed that it didn't pay off, but it's okay. I promise, it's okay if you decided to go out to the bar with your friends on Saturday night instead of slaving away for that calculus test you have on Monday morning. You will learn from your mistakes...or if you're like me, it might take a couple tries. But hey, at least I learned eventually, right?
