When You've Hit a Bad Luck Streak

So things aren't going right, it's okay.

It always happens that when one bad thing happens a lot more are yet to come. Some say it comes in threes. Others say that it's a rut. Who knows what it actually is. The point is you're in one and it sucks. It seems like it's never going to end.

It started with a low grade on an exam and turned into a broken down car, a sick parent, a professor upset with you, a nasty sunburn, and much, much more. All of this has put you in a state of stress that you don't think will ever end. It seems that just when things couldn't get worse, another bad thing happens.

You start to wonder what you did to deserve it. Did you forget to honk at the Lucky Barn? Did you see someone in need and not help them or if this karma coming back to get you for something you did ten years ago and can't even remember? Whatever it is, you'd wish it would end.

There is a good side to this though. You'll learn to handle the stress and to communicate with people when you would rather just lock yourself in your room. You'll also learn just where your breaking point is and how to deal with the annoying girl sitting next to you without completing blowing up on her for everything going wrong in your life. It's not her fault after all. You learn that real vanilla or vinegar takes the sting out of your sunburn and that pressing a Starbucks frappuccino to your cherry red face feels like a little slice of heaven. Most importantly, you learn to have fun even though nothing seems to be turning out right. To take a little time to yourself to read a book or to go to a trap shoot just to take your mind off things.

Whether it's three things or a rut, there's always a fourth thing or a mountain waiting for you. You'll get a better grade on the next exam, your dad will come in clutch and fix your car, your parent will start to feel better, you'll figure out how to make up for whatever upset your professor, and that sunburn will eventually peel. The point is, it gets better. It's cliche, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Take it from me, someone who is currently in the dark tunnel known as The Bad Luck Streak.

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
