Every 4 years the world gets to experience the best athletes compete for the highest title, the Olympic gold medal. Whether it is the winter or the summer Olympics, it is always entertaining to watch. Luckily, it’s almost time for the summer Olympics to take over our lives. If you’re not excited yet, hopefully, this will take you to that level.
The Opening Ceremony
Before every Olympics, there is an opening ceremony leading up to the start of the Olympic Games. It is like a march, with all of the athletes walking with the corresponding country which they are representing. There are performers, musicians, actors, and so much more. It is such an entertaining and exciting celebration to represent the world coming together.
Cheering on your country
Americans, usually more than any other country, are the most patriotic. We love celebrating our roots and how proud we are to be living in this nation. Athletics plays a big role in that patriotism. Seeing athletes from the United States of America in the Olympics gives you this feeling of honor like it’s your own family member out there. We cheer them on like we know them personally, and when we see an American up there winning the gold medal, and OUR national anthem is playing, we’re proud to be Americans.
Seeing your favorite athletes
A lot can change in 4 years. Some athletes will retire, others will get injured, and some will be training and getting ready for the next Olympics. Hearing that your favorite athlete will be competing yet again, is so exciting. You get to watch them do what they’re passionate about and hopefully win at the same time. Gabby Douglas, Michael Phelps, Misty May-Treanor? Who will we be seeing again this year?
Gymnastics
Growing up a gymnast, I am totally biased when it comes to the Olympics. I enjoy all sports in both the winter and summer Olympics but I sometimes wish there was even more gymnastics. The athletes from all countries are amazing to watch, and the sport itself is just so impressive. These are one of a kind athletes and deserve recognition.
Appreciation for the sports
Seeing these athletes that have worked since they were young, and achieve such a great honor like competing in the Olympics is inspiring to all. Watching them give it their all and put their heart and soul into their sport makes us appreciate them as a whole and admire the art of athletics.
Although the Olympics is athletes against athletes, and countries against countries, it still is a time where the world comes together as one to celebrate these sports. There are not many opportunities for the world to interact in a positive way. With all of the terrorism and war, we hear about on the news, it's relieving to have this heartwarming ceremony come our way and bring some peace and joy to everyone.
Don’t forget to tune in on August 5, 2016, for the start of the summer Olympics!
