Why We Need to 'Pack the Tuck' Next Year

As students, our support for the basketball team has been mediocre. Next year is the time to change that trend.

Why We Need to 'Pack the Tuck' Next Year

Football season is well over 150 days away, and the only thing keeping us sane is watching Jameis kill it at the combine. Baseball just began it's season, and basketball is in it's last month. That's a good thing, because next year Florida State will be superb on the court. I'll say it again: Florida State will be exceptional in basketball in 2015. Why all of a sudden will we be good at basketball next year? I'm glad you asked. Not only do we haul in the number five recruiting class next year according to ESPN, but we also have only one senior on the team. That senior, Turpin, is not even in the starting lineup. That means Xavier Rathan-Mayes, ya know the guy who scored 30 points in four and half minutes against Miami, will be back in full force next year. He will be joined by incoming consensus five-star recruit Dwayne Bacon, who is an absolute dirty scorer. Add another five-star and a four-star to the mix, and FSU will be a top 25 team next year. All this is fine and dandy, but it's not going to mean much if us students don't start going to the games.

Aside from the Duke game this year, the student section of the Tuck during basketball games has been disappointing and downright pathetic. As a fan base who is considered elite, it is embarrassing to time and time again have rows of empty seats at games. Next year that needs to change not only because of the product that we will see on the court, but because basketball games can be fun. Look at what Maryland's students did at their basketball game:

Or what Dukes' Cameron Crazies do every game:

Okay that's enough student section videos, but my point is that this could easily be our student section at basketball games next year. Our student section at Doak is incredible, and that atmosphere could easily transfer into the Tuck. I guarantee you're not going to be able use the excuse "Florida State's just not good at basketball" next year. It is a simple process: We all go to the games, we all be loud and rambunctious, and we get to watch the 'Noles be successful. But it starts with us, the students. Next year is the time to get behind our basketball team. Let's stop having embarrassing turn outs and being at the bottom half of the ACC for attendance. Even our sworn enemy from Gainesville has a nickname for their student section- rightfully referred to as the terrifying "Rowdy Reptiles". I for one am tired of having embarrassing showings for games, and next year that changes. We are Nole Nation, and we are dedicated, loyal fans. Let's show the rest of the country what the best student fan base in the country is capable of next year.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
