My seven year old brother just came home for the summer. This means every morning at around 7:00 or 8:00 a.m. I am greeted with a delighted and bubbly figure jumping on me and asking me random questions about the weather, dragons, and the likelihood of building a fort. It really doesn't bother me, as I am also an overly bubbly morning person. Some find this to be a bizarre dichotomy from human nature, but I would vehemently disagree. Here are a few reasons why we morning people enjoy waking up early so much.
1. Atmosphere.
Quiet, crisp mornings are the best. The sun is often rising and turning everything different shades of yellow and orange, most people are still asleep, and it feels like you have the world to yourself (or yourself and your brother, in my case).
2. Exercise.
I love working out early. I'm the person who takes the 8:00 a.m. class and wakes up at 6:00 to go work out. Walking or running outside is refreshing in the cool dewy air and once you've worked out, you're set for the rest of the day and don't have to think about it again. Plus you get your blood pumping and feel energized going about your day.
3. You have time.
If you have a day off from work and don't have an 8:00 a.m. class, you also have the luxury of waking up early and enjoying a very easy going start to your day. I can cook myself a fancy breakfast, make my bed, take extra time getting ready, or really anything. Its just relaxing to have all that extra time.
4. You're more productive.
You're brain is just waking up, newly refreshed and ready to tackle life. I find this to be my most productive time of the day and its usually when I do my work. I am a complete procrastinator but I work in the morning because I find I am more efficient, focused, and generally enjoy learning more when my brain isn't filled up from the day.
5. Morning tea or coffee.
One of my favorite morning highlights is drinking my tea or coffee. I sound like an old person, but I love taking my drink, sitting down on the couch and reading the news on my iPad. I tend to focus on the more positive sections, like science and fashion. Even just having a little me time makes the start of my day much more pleasant.
6. Improved routine.
Once you start waking up early, it gets harder to go to bed late. Most weekdays I don't like to stay up past 11:00 p.m. Getting in this habit helps me get a good amount of sleep and lets me enjoy my mornings instead of rushing about half awake.
I am, of course, completely biased in my love of mornings, but I would encourage anyone to try waking up early and beginning their day in a relaxing and focused manner. Especially with the onset of summer vacation, where all us teenagers will be tempted to sleep until noon, until our mothers bang on the door, and our curtains pulled open to reveal a too-bright sun.
As for me and my brother, we will stick to our early morning time. To be quite honest, I couldn't get out of it if I wanted to because he would probably drag me out of bed to watch the sunrise.
