Why Lubbock?
The new school year has begun which means the questions have started. Every new person you meet you get asked your major, where you’re from, and why Lubbock. Why would you pick Lubbock? Why Texas Tech? Why West Texas?
Well let me tell you.
Have you seen those sunsets? Sure, maybe West Texas doesn’t have the mountains that so many admire, instead we have flat land that let’s you see for miles. And it is for that reason that the sunset seems never ending.
We don’t have high skyscrapers or tall trees (or any trees at all), but when you lay in the back of the bed of a truck, you can see more stars than you ever imagined. You can’t help but smile at Gods beauty.
Tortillas have never been so important in your life. Taco Tuesday is suddenly a must, and you spend all week trying to figure out where you’re going to hide your tortilla on game night. Suddenly your tacos are paired with sweet tea, and the kick off on game night is covered with tortillas flying through the air.
When it rains it pours, and when it pours you have to think outside of the box to get to class. Your new class attire is rain boots and shorts, we make trash bags into ponchos, and decide if needed, we can take a kayak to class. What can I say? We are innovators.
Have you ever met someone from West Texas? There smile is a little nicer, their tea is a little sweeter, and their hearts to seem a little kinder. You can’t drive anywhere with out seeing a wave from someone in the other lane, or have a trip to Walmart with out seeing a familiar face. The small town life may not be as bad as you think.
Why Lubbock?
Well why not? Sure, West Texas is not where most people plan to end up. Its flat, dry, and at times seems to be in the middle of nowhere, but that is because most haven’t experienced its beauty.
Why Texas Tech?
Our colors aren’t burnt orange, so I think that is reason enough. We are rowdy, we are loud, and we couldn't be happier. Raider Power is the sound the rings through the campus as well as our victory bells after a beautiful Red Raider win. We aren’t just sports and tortillas either. I have met some of the most intelligent people I have ever come in contact with on the Texas Tech campus. We are the future, and in everything we do, we strive for honor.
Why West Texas?
We are the home of Josh Abbott, and Aaron Watson. We are the background of many country songs, and that isn’t for nothing. We thrive on two stepping, BBQ, and drive trucks where they will be pushed to their breaking point. We don’t consider ourselves “granola”, but instead we call that country.
So thank you Texas Tech, Lubbock, and West Texas. Thank you for proving everyone wrong. Thank you for the beautiful skies and the even more beautiful people. Thank you for not being TCU, because who would want to be a horned frog? Thank you for making us fall in love with you when we least expected it. Thank you for making this crazy, flat, “boring” place home.
