It's a universally accepted truth that it is usually incredibly tough and horribly depressing to be a Cubs fan.
We're one of the longest-suffering fanbases in sports (with the possible exception of the city of Cleveland), and we're certainly the longest-suffering fanbase in baseball.
We've suffered through years and years of mediocrity and could-have-beens.
We've been cursed by a goat.
We've endured the Bartman ball.
We've had all of our postseason hopes and dreams brutality crushed by mediocrity, and just generally destroyed by fate.
Quite frankly, we're sick of it.
And then, right before the 2015 season, I saw the following scene from "Back to the Future II" appearing on my Facebook wall shared multiple times:
As many may know, this scene is significant because the movie is set in 2015, and it predicts the Cubs will win the 2015 World Series. I jokingly shared the picture as well, with the caption "It's our year baby!"
Pretty much everyone I know rolled their eyes, and told me/commented that, "Oh, whatever, you say every year is supposed to be your year, lol." I didn't really believe it myself, so I just laughed it off.
And then the season started, and it looked like this:
(Kris Bryant homers)
(Kyle Schawber homers)
(Anthony Rizzo homers)
Suddenly, the Cubs were over .500 consistently, and we realized we had a winning team!
And we as a Cubs nation rejoiced, because we could finally, finally be excited about our team.
We felt blessed with Jake Arrieta's beautiful, luscious beard and magic arm.
This postseason, we feel like joining in and doing the "Twist and Shout" with Ferris Bueller down the streets of Chicago.
Because this is our year, this team is magical, and we're going #FlytheW.
