With the political season in full swing, you find yourself watching a debate or two. While these televised platforms are supposed to provide us American voters with the knowledge we need in order to make an informed decision about who to pick to run our nation for the next four years, I can't help but find myself questioning if I'm really learning anything about the candidates at all that pertain to the security and direction of our country.
Rather than watching an intelligent debate on issues that are rising in our nation, I feel like I'm watching "Mean Girls." It seems like all the candidates do during debates is bash one another. If you think that's bad, here's the worse part: the hosts are asking questions that have nothing to do with the real issues. Rather than asking the candidates what they would do to improve our health care system or help the national debt, Ted Cruz is being asked if he's eligible to run and Marco Rubio is being questioned about his money situation (which occurred years ago).
I don't want to sit there watching the Republican debate and only hear about how a candidate is so much better than Hillary Clinton. Instead, I want to hear about how said candidate is planning on fixing our crippled nation.
In a society where gossip is all the rage, we can't help ourselves. I understand this just as much as anyone; however, I understand the time and place, and the debate that can persuade Americans to take action against the failing system is not the place.
Instead of sitting around watching Trump and Cruz go at it or watch Carson fall asleep on the stage, I want to listen to a stimulating conversation between grown adults about their points of views and the research they've done in order to improve our nation. Political debates are not a place to bring up petty drama that occurred years ago. It's a time to discuss the issues that are truly important and impact our society.
I love politics and being involved, but I can't help but get highly frustrated at the direction politics is headed. Rather than it being an educated topic and informed decision about who is best fit to run our nation, elections have just become a middle-school group of girls, drama-filled and catty. We are the ones who let this continue. We are the ones who feed off of this negativity. Instead of being interested with what representative A said about guy B, we need to be more concered with how these two candidates are purposing to improve our nation as a whole.
