The Olympic Sports You Didn't Know Were Olympic Sports

Some of these are just plain funny.

Everyone knows the Summer Olympics for the main sports like gymnastics, swimming, track, volleyball, etc. But there are many events I didn't even know existed, but since I did, they’ve become my favorites (if not only for the funny pictures). Who knows, you might find yourself medaling in one of these events in your everyday life.

1. Trampoline.

Did you know you could win a medal for the crazy tricks you did on your backyard trampoline as a kid? It might be time to pull it back out because that might be the closest you get to being an Olympian.

2. Canoeing.

Another surprising hobby that can get you a medal. This seems to be the most dangerous sport (in my opinion), but you'll be able to row circles around your family the next time you go to the river.

3. Race Walking.

All of the moms that walk laps in your neighborhood would win gold at this event. Their precision and patience are the true talents on display here.

4. Rhythmic gymnastics.

This is an odd one. They run around with ribbons, balls and hula hoops? How do you even judge? Not for me as much.

5. Synchronized swimming.

The fact that they are in full makeup that stays on perfectly while fully submerged in a pool is a miracle in its own right. But being fully in sync with another person is pretty cool. I wonder if they are in sync out of the pool too.

6. Live pigeon shooting.

OK so this isn’t a current event, but it was until the 1900 Olympics. It's super intriguing, were there no crazy animal rights people back then? Who had to clean up the slain pigeons every single round? How did the pigeons feel about it?

7. The modern pentathlon.

This event is crazy and to compete you have to be one of those people who is great at everything they do. Remember the girl in high school who was on varsity basketball, soccer, choir, art and had a 4.0 GPA? Yeah, she would do great at this event. It includes pistol shooting, fencing, 200 meter freestyle swimming, show jumping and a three-kilometer cross-country run. Anyone who wins that should win the Olympics overall.

8. Curling.

This isn't a summer sport, but one is an odd one as well. You sweep the floor over and over so a huge plate will slide across? I bet these athlete’s houses are incredibly clean (and also very slippery.)

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
