Reading was one of my favorite things growing up. I was the kid that would lock herself in her room for hours, days even, to finish my current book.
In college, it is just as important to continue reading. I know it seems crazy, I have been there. I think that I went three years reading only a handful of books outside of assigned readings. And for many students, like myself, outside reading might seem less important than the other things on your to-do list, but I would argue that it should be just as important. We should all prioritize reading books outside of the classroom and here are some reasons why:
Reading helps you create opinions.
Opinions about things that are important issues in the world. When you are reading various contrasting opinions on topics, you are more likely to develop a stronger stance on the topic and you will be learning how to defend your opinions.
Reading expands your vocabulary.
When you are reading a book and you encounter words that you didn't already know, your brain will take the surrounding information and words and help create new definitions for words, thus expanding your already vast vocabulary.
Reading develops you as a writer.
When I am having writer's block or struggling developing topics and ideas to write about, I will take a break and pick up a good book and let my mind indulge in the words on the page. To truly enhance your writing you should try to not just read but to think critically about what you are reading. Try to understand all of the underlying messages in the story, why was it written the way that it was? It can really help develop a more mature writing style.
Reading is relaxing.
Reading is an excellent way to decompress. Why do you think that the idea of a candlelit bubble bath and a good book seems so appealing? We know that if we take the time to read, we are able to escape our current everyday stresses and explore a new world. Not only are we allowing our mind to go on an exciting or informational adventure but we are also giving it a vacation. Just short amounts of reading can reduce stress levels significantly in young adults and adults.
So, shut your computer and grab your favorite book. If you don't have a book in your dorm room or apartment then head over to the library. No excuses with that one; library cards are free. Let yourself relax with a warm cup of tea in a quiet corner and take yourself on a mini vacation.
