Earlier this semester, for one of my first articles, I covered the announcement NHL All-Star game in Nashville. Since then, there's been a lot of commotion about the behind the scenes action surrounding the game, including the addition of John Scott of the Montreal Canadians farm team, to the All-Star Roster.
For those of you who don't know, let's break down the stats. In his entire NHL career thus far he's played in 289 games (regular season and playoffs). In those games:
-Five goals, six assists, for a total of 11 points
-564 penalty minutes, just around two minutes every game.
Now that, my friend, is not an NHL All-Star. But the fans begged to differ. What started off as what seemed a viral joke ended with a standing ovation for Scott at the Bridgestone Arena on Saturday's Skills Competition, part of NHL All-Star Weekend.
The NHL instituted a fan-voting system this year to help decided the rosters and captains of the All-Star Teams. What started off as people voting for John Scott for the sake of being, well, John Scott, led to him being named the Captain of the Pacific Division All-Star Team. Wow.
However, the road was pretty rocky. The NHL stepped in and tried to get John Scott to pull out of the All-Star Game. An NHL rep even asked him, "Do you think this is something your kids would be proud of?"
To that, in a heart-warming personal testimony written by Scott himself, he responded, "Because, while I may not deserve to be an NHL All-Star, I know I deserve to be the judge of what my kids will — and won't — be proud of me for."
Scott's article hits right in the feels. After being traded and being deemed inept to compete, Scott will take the ice tonight (Jan. 31st) as captain of the 2016 Pacific Division All-Star Team.
You go, John Scott. Your old pals in Buffalo are cheering you on.
