Los Angeles currently has a plethora of sports teams, with two NBA teams, two MLB teams, one NHL team and one MLS team. With one or more teams for each of the major leagues in the USA, there is one major league that was missing until this year: the NFL. The NFL is the most popular league based on viewership compared to the other leagues, yet the 2nd most populated city, Los Angeles did not have a team until the Rams moved to Los Angeles this year. With a major move such as this, there are many effects that will take place.
The biggest change is the change in the value of the team. The team was valued at $1.45 Billion while it was in St. Louis but immediately after they moved to Los Angeles it was valued at $2.9 Billion. This drastic change in team value shows the importance that the city has. There was no change in revenue, there was no new sponsorship deal, and there was no new television deal. The only change was location of the team.
This means that there will probably be more owners looking to increase their team's value by moving their team to Los Angeles. The $2.6 Billion stadium that Stan Kroenke will be building in Inglewood can potentially host another team, so teams looking for a new home such as San Diego and Oakland could move to Los Angeles. With two potential teams increasing the value of their team by around $1.5 Billion, the overall value of the other 28 franchises will increase as well.
The Inglewood Stadium (City of Champions Stadium) in Los Angeles has already been awarded the 2021 Super Bowl, and will likely host major college football bowl games. The increasing opportunities that Los Angeles in sports will increase tourism leading to increasing revenue for the city. The stadium is expected to open in 2019, and will be one of the landmark stadiums in the country.
In the past 10 years, there have been six new stadiums: U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, At&T Stadium in Arlington, Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, and the University of Phoenix Stadium in Arizona. There is also the Mercedes Benz Stadium set to open in 2017. The abundance of new stadiums will make potential World Cup bids possible, and a brand new stadium in the second most populated city, Los Angeles, will make a bid stronger.
The Rams' move to Los Angeles will make a lot of changes in the city of Los Angeles and in the NFL. There will be new opportunities for the city as a result of the move, and the city will enjoy the team for many years!
