The Boys You Meet In College Told By Bowling Green Bars

You know what I'm talking about.

Since Opening Weekend is quickly approaching and the main strip will be flooded with newly freshmen bar goers all the way to the victory lap seniors- it only seems appropriate to cover this topic.

Grumpy Daves

Our first stop is the bar that becomes a vague memory on opening weekend because they charged you ten dollars to come inside as a freshmen and to only go upstairs to see a guy with a laptop playing some underground electronic music and that one random person twerking in the corner.

This is the guy you meet at your SOAR day that immediately added you on all social media platforms and all you did was say, “Hi my name is…” Thanks for liking all my Instagram pictures though.

Howards

This is the bar that is always passed to go to another bar and is usually forgotten.

This is the boy that’ll sit next to you in your GSW class your first semester and for some reason you just can remember his name. So every conversation is started with you making eye contact and just talking out loud hoping he never notices that his name has been replaced with, ‘Hey.’

Bar 149

"That one bar" Yup.

This is equivalent to, "that one boy that one time after I drank to much" What was his name?

Shots Inc.

This is the go to for any 18 year old because it’s one of the closest bars from the resident halls on campus. You’ll see the occasional groups of upper classmen towards the end of the night because ending your night at shots is nostalgic. Shout out to mirror dancing dude!

This is the boy that you had your first college fling with and it just didn’t work out, but snapchat are still sent to one another weekly.

Doc Holliday's

Where the old Melt Shoppe used to be, but still good drinks and food along with an outside area. But seriously, the Melt Shoppe was the bomb.

This boy is the one that your mind likes to make up to be so much better than what he is. your mind betrays you and you go to see him thinking hes this wonderful human, but you are reminded instantly that he was just the run of the mill guy. Whatever - not every rock can be a diamond, right?

Tubby’s Tavern

The long island iced tea stop. Tubby’s is well known for having the biggest long island that usually does the trick when you only have 5 dollars to give to your older friend. This night usually doesn’t end well if too many are consumed.

The boy that is equivalent to this is the cutie down the hall that turned into a late night hangout and now it’s really awkward when you pass him on the daily to go get breakfast at the Oaks. I mean it seemed like a good idea at 2:45 am- plus The Office was on. Hi Jim.

The Attic

“The bar that has the stripper pole and the balcony” enough said.

Imagine you’re in a huge lecture hall and every five second you make eye contact with this exotic looking man and you just want to know more about him, but you’re too much of a chicken. Random thoughts are going through your head while you plan your plan to finally say hi, but is rudely interrupted by that one student that has to argue with the professor. *sigh*

Uptown

This bar used to be dead. All. The. Time. But for whatever reason this past year Uptown has been the place to go which makes it extremely crowded.

Well, this is the boy that you once had a thing with him your freshmen year and it was decent, but holy crap look at him now. Then he opens his mouth and you literally cannot with his arrogance. Yes, please tell me again how much you can bench press. Not. Bye. It’s ruined now. I hope you read that how Stewie Griffin said it in that one episode that one time.

Ziggy's

“For Falcons by Falcons” who doesn’t love BG spirit in a bar? This is your falcon fanatic bar that just so happens to be close to campus and right next to Taco Bell. *Cue Ay Ziggy Zoomba Zoomba Zoomba*

The boy that is red shirted his first year and also has taken an interest in you, but also seems to friend zone himself. This could have been a thing- but it just was never there. Tragic.

Tiki

Tiki has taken over the “Clazel” vibe and it truly is a sad thing to watch. Tiki which is home of the Malibu Bucket and the few swings with sand that are rare to get. So when you get a swing- cherish it. *cue Adam Sandler in Billy Madison*

The boy that you have had a thing with for a while and its public knowledge in your friend circle that you’re both going home together after all of the bars and spend all your time together, but you slowly start to realize that he is a man-child and that he has wasted your time. Tell that boy bye and I ain’t sorry.

Liquid Bar

Formally known as “Sky Bar” if you ask anybody 23 and up. This bar is used as a gateway to Tiki in the warmer months are is packed with people dances on the high platforms in the dance room, while people who are over that scene sit at the booths and just drink up.

This is the boy that should be a man, but is still stuck in his glory days when he won an intramural sport or won an event for a philanthropic cause. He’s a good guy, but definitely not someone I would bring home to meet my parents.

Nate & Wally's Fishbowl

Order multiple different flavors and they put it in a fishbowl which is awesome on its own and the drinks are delicious. Oh yeah, there is also live entertainment!

This is the man that will be at Finders and memorizes your Starbucks order. He may not be your future husband, but he is definitely someone to keep around. He’s fun and always lets you pick the movie or Netflix show.

Downtown

You got pool, karaoke, TV’s everywhere, crab races, that one punching game and delicious food. All of this with alcohol? Yes please. Downtown is like that one spot on your couch that is the comfiest.

This is the boy that has just recently turned into an actual man since you’ve been dating and no longer wakes up in random places or passes out with his shoes on. He now realizes that Netflix and snugs are not a permanent substitute for actual dates and no longer has that one girl that is lingering around him constantly. Bye Felicia. He definitely has a way to go, but he is in the correct direction and is making the distance less and less every day. You go girl!

Brathaus

The smell of popcorn and Legal Joints wafting out of this establishment keep people coming back and there usually isn’t 18 year old grinding on each other in this bar. Which is serious plus.

This is your 21 and up man who just wants to have a good time for his last couple year in college and even though he knows that Legal Joints are sickly sweet and will give him a headache the next morning he is still going to drink two and then snug with you in the morning. If you just want to enjoy your collegiate career with your friends and make memories this boy is for you. It’s fun and not complicated.

Beckett's

Maybe it’s just a me thing, but this is a high school reunion every time I walk in there. No thanks. But those 1 dollar margaritas and fifty cent tacos on Wednesday basically drag me in there.

This is the boy that is still very much involved in his high school and his high school friend group. He’s cute and sweet, but maybe you aren’t a hometown type of girl or stuck in the past so he isn’t for you. But let’s say you guys click and you enjoy the small town along with him doting on you (who doesn’t really want that) this guy is the number one pick for you. To each their own.

Reverend's Bar and Grill

“Revsday.” Good food and good beer selection. You can’t go wrong.

This man knows what he likes and is a “go-getter” type of person. He introduces you to new things and you go on little weekend get-aways. Meeting his parents doesn’t seem out of the question, but being self-conscious is something that goes in hang with this man. He doesn’t do anything to make you feel bad, but he doesn’t reassure you from time to time either. We don’t need it all the time, but the little reminder every once in a while goes a long way.

City Tap

Large IPA selection, good food along with an outdoor section.

This is the man that knows his beer and has a preference that has grown way past the low end domestics. Also Natural Light is not even in his vocabulary when it comes to a drink list. This man is someone you meet usually towards the end of you collegiate career because it always happens like that. You’re stuck there mentally kicking yourself wondering why the hell it took so long to find an actual man that treats you right and is the perfect formal date. The only downfall is that he is a lousy texter, but that’s okay because he doesn’t give you any reason to worry.

Campus Quarters

They have an awesome happy hour, great regulars, yummy beers on tap, trivia night, Shot club list, pool and Football Sundays. Campus Quarters isnt close to any of the bars downtown and is 21 and up bar. I’m not bias or anything.

This is the man that doesn’t need to get drunk in order to drink. He orders all of his drinks neat. This is the goal ladies. He can hold his alcohol and knows his limit. After a long day of work he comes in gets a drink, pays and comes home to you with flowers because he know that applying for different programs for masters is hard and he wants to cheer you up. Your parents approve and basically like him more than you and his place doesn’t have a random American flag (God Bless) as his only decoration. His house is refined, but he doesn’t judge you for having a typical college house with 5 roommates. This man doesn’t play games. He doesn’t wait 3 hours to text you back. He actually calls you on the phone- why is this a lost form of communication? He is A-okay with you having a girl’s night out and doesn’t blow up your phone. He gives you the right amount of space. He is not the boy who invites you over at midnight to “hangout” why? Because he is a man. If you have made it here –you have the gold medal.

This is just one interpretation on this and obviously we all know the end game, but that doesn’t mean the journey to get there isn’t fun and doesn’t make for a good story the morning after at Kermits. Amirite?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
