You are just a kid from the Midwest and KABOOM - you are about to head off to college in the mighty Northeast. Yeah, you think you know what it takes to live out there, but think again, kiddo! You know nothing. Forget everything you have ever learned. Release your mind from the past and absorb the information below. Become one with it. Internalize it and make it a part of your essence. You will NEED to know these things to last even a single day in the Northeast!

1. The Time Zone

This doesn't get talked about when your parents are sending you off for college. Little known fact - not everyone in the world uses Central Time. I know! That's crazy, right? Well, you just have to deal with it. Now you know what "ET" on your TV means. Good luck making sense of your Google Calendar.

2. License Plates

Wait, what's that piece of metal on the back of that car that DOESN'T have Abraham Lincoln's face on it? Oh right - other states use license plates, too! Ocean State? Umm...hello?

3. Zip Codes

Surprisingly, nobody teaches you in school that numbers can start with zeros at the front. So confusing. I *really* wish somebody told me that before I got here. Mail would have been SO much simpler.

4. Local Politics

Wait - you're telling me Rahm Emanuel *isn't* the mayor of Providence? Then who is? That's right - it's Jorge Elorza, and he has nothing to do with the Midwest. Understanding how cities work would be so much easier if people just explained that local political leaders change with geographical location.

5. Latitude and Longitude

Intuitive when brought up, but devastatingly subtle. This is something everyone ought to know.

6. Weather Patterns

Goodbye tornadoes, and say hello to hurricanes sometimes! Weather differs from place to place and while I am not knowledgeable enough to describe specific differences between Midwestern and East Coast weather phenomena besides tornadoes and hurricanes, you better believe that the weather varies somehow. Google it.

7. Sports teams affiliations of local residents

People in the Northeast generally root for the Patriots, the Celtics, the Red Sox, and the Bruins. Very few people in the Midwest can say the same. This is a difference that you may not think about until you arrive, but it is factually existent.

Anything else you think everyone should know? Leave a comment.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
