If you haven't heard by now, Hope Solo, the best women's goalkeeper in the world, was suspended for six months and lost her contract with the Women's U.S. Soccer Team. What horrible crime could Solo have possibly done that resulted in such a massive consequence? After losing to Sweden in the 2016 Olympics, Solo called the other team "cowards" out of frustration in a post-game interview. That one word that came out of Solo's mouth cost her six-month suspension and a terminated contract because she represents the US.
I don't know about you, but I think that is a crazy consequence. No, this isn't the first time she has to be penalized for her actions, and I understand that they are trying to teach her a lesson. But kicking her off the team, in my opinion, was overdoing it. She does need to be punished for her actions, but she deserves a punishment that is more realistic.
There have been many other situations where a U.S. representative has done something that poorly showcases the U.S. and have no punishment for it. For an example, Mr. Donald Trump. He represents the United States by running to be the next president. However, Trump is not the nicest guy when it comes to other countries or even citizens in his country. Trump also Hillary Clinton names such as "Crooked Hillary".
Does Trump get any punishment for his actions? Nope. He gets praised. How can the guy running to be the face of the U.S. get away with name calling and bulling when Solo loses her contract. I am slightly confused on how these situations differ from each other. They both represent the U.S. in some way, and they both can't control their mouths during certain circumstances.
Another situation where a U.S. representative messed up is Ryan Lochte. Lochte made up a story about him and a few other teammates getting robbed at gunpoint where, in reality, he was the one that was drunk and vandalized a gas station. Was Lochte suspended for six months and lost his contract? Nope. He got the "He is just a kid, give him a second chance", and the loss of a few sponsors consequence. Lochte is 32; he is not a kid.
I could go on about all the U.S. representatives that messed up, but nobody has the time for that. I am not saying that Solo should be a part of the bunch that did not get punished, I just think they need to be fair when they give out consequences.
