The 2016 Rio Summer Olympics have finally (almost) arrived! With over 306 events spread across 28 sports, this is bound to be a jam packed event full of excitement, competition and fun. Most of us are familiar with the Olympics and even have our favorite sports we are dedicated to watching - but how many of the 28 sports can we name? Here are 7 Olympic sports you may have never heard of- some are quite bizarre!
1. Handball
Handball made its Olympic debut at the Berlin Games of 1936, yet most of us didn't even know it existed. This sport uses a combination of basketball, lacrosse and soccer skills and is typically played on an indoor court. Sweden and Korea are among the most decorated countries, winning a combined 10 medals.
2. Taekwondo
Meaning, "the way of the feet and the hands," is a martial art that has recently been added to the Olympic roster. In fact, although this sport has been around for centuries dating back B.C. it was not instated as an Olympic sport until The Sydney Olympics 2000.
3. Judo
This sport may look like regular wrestling, however it is far from it. Judo originally derives from Jujitsu. This sport combines martial art and combat techniques, in order to pin their opponent. Unlike traditional wrestling, Judo has 5 different ways to pin their opponent and win the match. Like wrestling, competitors are divided into varied weight classes. U.S.A. athlete Kayla Harrison is the only U.S Judo athlete to win a gold medal. Japan dominates this sport, winning a total of 34 gold medals since its debut.
