The 2016 election to me has been nothing short of fascinating. Donald Trump, the Republican nominee known for Trump Towers, Celebrity Apprentice. Who has shocked many people within the past year with his run towards the presidency. Then there's Hillary Clinton, the first female candidate for president, the first lady in the United States, who went on to become senator of New York and Secretary of state. You can say that things have gotten "interesting" in this year's election.
Which is why quite frankly, I'm not going to post my political opinions on social media.
Why? you may ask. First of all, both candidates in my honest opinion are such polar opposites that if I were to post something on Facebook about how much I dislike Donald Trump and his way too bronzed orange skin. I would probably get one of my relatives, or someone that I happen to be Facebook friends with, disagreeing with me. Now, I'm the type of person who would rather post some clever witty status that I think is funny, or some random animal video that I found on the Buzzfeed animals Facebook page than to post something controversial. Quite Frankly, it's not worth it to me. Regardless, people are going to delete me anyways because I share too many animal videos, but I would rather them delete me because I post too much about animals and not for something I said.
Also, my friends are very important to me, I've had a mix of friends who are Bernie fans, some who like Trump, and some who are #Imwithher. I'm the type of person who likes someone for who they are, not for your political views, or for your religion because quite frankly to me that doesn't really quite matter as long as you are a nice person and are willing to be my friend. Social media brings out the worst in people because of that. Friendships were actually lost just because one person decided to vote for another candidate rather than the candidate that they were voting for (or at least people were dumb enough to post about threatening to end friendships in the first place) Point is, if you want to post about politics, do it right, don't end your friendship with someone just because they voted for Hillary Clinton rather than Bernie Sanders.
Which brings me to my next point, employees search your Facebook. If you happen to be friends with your boss, or your co-workers, or that random janitor who decided to friend you on Facebook. Be Warned: they see your stuff. Yes, that includes your political opinions or pictures of you drinking tequila at DaVincis with your best friends. If your boss, or someone who is potentially hiring you searches through your Facebook and happens to find anything that they think is inappropriate, You're not getting that job. Even worse, you might get fired from your dream job.
Bottom line is, for me; it's all too much. I'm going to only tell my friends/ family/Odyssey colleagues my political opinion rather than post it on Facebook for the whole world to see. Now, this may not work for everyone, but the next time you want to post something about politics on Facebook, think of who you are posting to and how this may affect you in the long run.
