Being Sick Without Your Mom There Is The Worst
The Huffington Post

It was around that time everyone got sick, and how it spread oh so very quick. It wasn't just a cough or two, everybody got struck with the JM-FLU. The weather was changing from snow to hot, nobody ever would have given it a thought. So around the room, you heard sniffles and coughs afraid that you would be the next one to be caught with the sickness going around.

Whenever you're sick at college, all you want is your mom there for you. It seems so difficult to get up, eat, or get prescriptions without her there with you. There are so many reasons why it sucks not having your mom at college when you're sick; here's just a few:

1. She always drove you to the doctor when you needed it. Now you're lucky if your roommate or friend can go with you.

2. When there are problems with your medication, nobody else can handle the CVS Pharmacy like they can.

3. They make you chicken noodle soup and hot tea, and sometimes you can make that for yourself when you don't feel like death, but it's just not the same.

4. She would tell you not to worry about school and just get some rest. Meanwhile, you're too worried about failing out of all of your classes you try to get through anyway.

5. She would spend time with you and watch movies with you when you're sick. Now you get to lock yourself in your room and watch Netflix because nobody wants to catch your sickness. The sick and lonely feeling is just no fun.

6. Most of the time if you were home, you wouldn't even need to worry about going out and trying to figure out what's the best medication to take for your symptoms. Half of the time, the house was a CVS pharmacy and she always knew just what to get and what to have on hand. If she didn't have it, you would bet it would be there later that day. Now you stand in the medication aisles and desperately call your mom about what to get for your illness.

7. She would remind you to take your medication, get some rest, and to not go out. She can't enforce it too much when she's so far away so you end up pushing yourself too much anyway.

The fact of the matter is that the weather has been going from wearing beanies and winter coats to shorts and tank tops without warning and our bodies just can't keep up. Moms, we want you here with us at college to take care of us, but that's not the only reason why we miss you (but being sick is the main reason during this season).

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
