Selection Sunday kicks off the biggest and most beloved basketball event in March. March Madness, in a way, is magical. Well, if you enjoy college basketball. If you don't enjoy college basketball, then it's just an overload of sports-ing and you end up avoiding the following stations: CBS, TBS, TNT, and TruTV for the remainder of the month.
This past week has been conference championship week. Those that win their conference championship get an automatic ticket to the dance. The rest of the NCAA bracket gets revealed Sunday, as well as where all the teams are getting sent, and what seeds they will be in the bracket.
Each conference tournament has had their own bit of madness occur already.
In the Missouri Valley Conference tournament there was some madness when Northern Iowa played Wichita State. The game started off with Wichita State getting several unanswered points. Then, Northern Iowa got into the swing of things and it was an intense battle from there. The game ended with an overtime win for UNI.
This could also be seen in the MVC championship game, which nearly went into overtime until Wes Washpun sunk a three point shot with three seconds left in regulation, sending UNI to the dance and Evansville home.
But that's only in one conference.
In the American Athletic Conference an intense battle took place between Connecticut and Cincinnati. It wasn't the championship- it was actually the quarterfinals- but it probably felt like one. This game went into not one, but FOUR overtimes, proving that both teams were going to fight until the end. UConn managed to slip past Cincy with a score of 104 to 97, and managed to beat Temple in the semis.
There's also teams that haven't been in the tourney for a while. For example, Yale hasn't appeared in the tournament since 1962. Now, 54 years later, Yale will be representing the Ivy League. (There also wasn't a conference tournament for the Ivy League and Yale got their ticket based on the regular season.)
But this is a magical time of year as well, especially for the little teams. Teams you never have heard of or would have never dreamed would get a chance to dance. The easiest example of this would be Stony Brook, from the America East Conference. This is their FIRST EVER dance. They managed to take down Vermont 80 to 74.
We won't know the complete line up of dancers until the selection show at 5:30 p.m. E.T. on CBS. There are some conference championships that will be occurring this fine Sunday before the selection show. Championships from the following conferences will be decided on Sunday: American Athletic, Atlantic 10, Big 10, Southeastern, and Sunbelt.
As for the teams that are already in, it looks like a good mix of the familiar and unfamiliar. Here's the teams that have their tickets punched and dancing shoes laced up: Stony Brook, North Carolina, Florida Gulf Coast, Kansas, Seton Hall, Weber State, UNC Asheville, Hawaii, UNCW, Middle Tennessee St., Green Bay, Yale, Iona, Buffalo, Hampton, Northern Iowa, Fresno State, Fairleigh Dickinson, Austin Peay, Oregon, Holy Cross, Chattanooga, Stephen F. Austin, Southern, South Dakota State, Gonzaga, and CSU Bakersfield. The complete list (with conferences) can be found here.
But, at the end of the day, this fine Selection Sunday, we'll know our dancers, their partners, and their venues.
And then the real dance begins.
*Originally written Saturday, March 12. Other teams will be or are currently competing for conference championships on Sunday, March 13. The final bracket of March Madness teams will be revealed at the Selection Show.
