Two weeks into the NBA season and the Phoenix Suns’ season is already over. Nothing but disaster has hit this organization ever since the offseason. After firing former Head Coach Earl Watson, this team is clearly already looking into next year.
The Suns’ problems really started in the offseason. After a disappointing 2016-2017 season of going 24-58, the Suns found themselves with the best odds to land the second pick in the 2017 NBA draft. With players such as Markelle Fultz, Jayson Tatum and Lonzo Ball expected to be drafted with the top three picks, the Suns were excited at the prospect of drafting the next NBA superstar. They had a 55.3 percent chance of getting one of the top three picks.
However, fate was not on their side. On draft lottery night, the Suns could do nothing but watch as the Celtics, Lakers, and 76ers received the top three picks respectively. They expected the second pick and came away with the fourth pick of the draft.
While the fourth pick in the NBA draft certainly isn’t anything to be angry about, it certainly was not what the Suns were hoping for. Landing one of the top three picks would have given the Suns a player with the potential of becoming their franchise player of the future. Instead, with the fourth pick, they drafted Josh Jackson from Kansas.
Jackson was a very good player in college and the Suns hope he can become their next franchise player. Unfortunately, Jackson’s shooting ability does limit his potential. The value of three-point shooting in the NBA is becoming more and more important every day and Jackson only shot 23.7 percent behind the three-point arc in college. Even more concerning was his free throw percentage, which he shot an alarming 57 percent.
Jackson’s shooting woes could limit him as a solid starter in his NBA career. As a perimeter player, if he doesn’t transform his shooting touch, he will never become the superstar that the Suns hope he will become. That is the difference between the second pick of the draft and the fourth pick of the draft.
Phoenix’s woes don’t end here.
Three games into this NBA season, the Suns announced that Head Coach Earl Watson was fired. During his tenure, he only managed to have a 33-85 record, but many believe his firing was unjust. The Suns have the youngest roster in the NBA. This team is expected to struggle. Watson has no control of roster personal and was forced to work with a bad situation after being named Head Coach in 2016 after the Suns had fired the previous coach, Jeff Hornacek with 33 games left in that season.
Losing comes from all branches of an organization. Team management is arguably more responsible for the Sun’s struggles than Watson was. He simply didn’t have satisfactory players to work with. NBA teams chose to tank and purposely lose in the regular season all the time, and that’s what the Suns have done for the past two years and will most likely continue this year. If ownership isn’t happy with the situation, then they only have themselves to blame, not Watson.
The firing of a head coach creates problems. It’s a distraction in the locker room, team chemistry is negatively affected and the players now have to adjust to new schemes and leadership. In the beginning of a season with the youngest roster in the NBA, this spells out trouble.
Capping off this disastrous start to the season is Eric Bledsoe. Bledsoe was the starting point guard for the Suns and was their best player and leader of the team. Even though he’s not an all-star at his position in the league, he is a reliable and proven point guard.
Bledsoe has expressed frustration with the team and had requested a trade in the offseason. He did not want to waste his talents on an “underperforming team.” Shortly after Watson was fired, he had tweeted “I don't wanna be here.” He’s denied that he was referring to the Suns and said he was at the hair salon with his wife. Suns’ management doesn’t believe him and has reported that he will no longer play with the Phoenix Suns. He’s still technically on the roster, but he hasn’t played since the tweet and will most likely be traded soon.
Not only have the Suns lost their best player, but they have also created a big distraction and bad example for a young team. The Suns have already dug themselves a big hole for their rebuilding process, and are presumably already looking at lottery odds for next year’s draft.
