I'm sure everyone would agree that college is a very stressful time and having a pet, my kitten, has made my life easier and happier. Just think, when you're really stressed and cramming for an exam or busting out a paper--now think how calm it would make you if there was a little full ball of a kitten laying in your lap purring while your cramming; much better right?
Here are some reasons why having a kitten has actually made my life a lot less stressful and made me an overall happier person:
1.They are better for the environment
If you're anything like me and super worried about your carbon footprint, cats eat less in general and are more likely to eat fish rather than beef flavored products reducing their carbon footprint when compared to a dog.
2.They fulfill the need for companionship
Craving cuddles is normal and having a cat is a perfect way to fulfill that need; especially if you're in a long distance relationship like me. They basically invented napping, and you'll never pee alone again.
3.They help teach responsibility and patience
Getting a kitten is NOT easy but how fluffy and adorable they are definitely makes up for them knocking over glasses of water, scratching your furniture or running and meowing super loud all night long. Aside from all of that my kitten, Bella has taught me how to be patient and be responsible. Remembering to feed her before I run off to my 8 am class or cutting my vacations shorter because I miss my kitten or feel bad for leaving her for too many days has kept me on a much needed schedule.
4.They make you laugh
From sprinting back and forth to falling off of things to scaling things, cats are hilarious. There is a reason that "funny cat videos" is one of the most searched things on YouTube.
Whether its a cat or a dog or maybe a hamster, pets are great from anxiety, stress and depression. All college students face an immense amount of stress daily and having a little fur ball to cuddle up with at the end of a hard day could be super helpful.
